Major Injury Occurs in I-5 Rollover Crash on a Stockton Highway

A severe rollover crash occurred on a Stockton highway on June 3 when two vehicles collided on Interstate 5. Both vehicles experienced violent rollovers and ended up on their roofs. The accident occurred on the West Side Freeway just north of the Hammer Lane on-ramp around 1:15 p.m.

According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the accident involved a Toyota Sienna and a white sedan. When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered two lanes on the highway were blocked by the crash, and both vehicles were on their roofs.

The Stockton Fire Department emergency responders were called to the scene and determined that a major injury had occurred. They transported the patient to a hospital for additional care. The CHP traffic collision unit is determining what happened to cause the collision.

Rollover Accidents and Their Risks

There are a number of risks associated with a rollover, including:

  • The increased risk of trauma: Due to the dynamics of the crash, a rollover crash on a Stockton highway significantly elevates the potential for severe injuries. The risk of injury escalates if occupants are not using seatbelts or other restraints, as this can lead to ejection from the vehicle. Additionally, flying debris inside the vehicle during a rollover can cause further harm. Without adequate protection, vehicle parts may crush the occupants. To mitigate such severe injury risks, passengers should always wear seat belts while traveling in an automobile.
  • The added danger of roof collapse: Roof collapse in a rollover crash on a Stockton highway presents an additional danger, often resulting in traumatic brain injuries, broken bones, lacerations, and even fatalities. Unfortunately, some auto manufacturers fail to ensure that their vehicles have adequate roof and side strength to prevent collapse during a rollover despite regulatory requirements. The reduction in survivability space is a major consequence of roof crush, further endangering the occupants.
  • Rollover accidents and vehicle damage: Besides inflicting physical harm on occupants, rollover accidents can damage vehicles beyond repair. These crashes can lead to fuel spills, fires, and other hazards that pose additional injury risks or fatalities. Engineers must examine the collapse of the vehicle’s roof post-accident. An auto product liability claim may be filed if a manufacturer is found to be at fault for the injuries or deaths due to inadequate vehicle design.
