Two Injured and One Dead in Pittsburg Rollover Accident
A solo car accident took the life of one person and left two people injured on Sunday, June 17, 2018. According to witness reports recorded by the California Highway Patrol (CHP), an unidentified person was driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee with two passengers along Highway 4 in the No. 2 eastbound lane at approximately 80 – 90 mph. Then, they quickly veered across all right side lanes. The Jeep entered the right shoulder and subsequently collided against the concrete curb, causing the vehicle to flip over on its roof. Emergency responders assisted in the transportation of two injured patients to a hospital for immediate medical treatment. They also declared that one Antioch man had passed away, who was later identified to be 25-year old Maurelle Cater.
I would like to offer my deepest condolences to all family members and close friends of the deceased victim during this tragic time, as well as my wishes for a quick recovery to those that received injuries from the accident.
Emergency Response Crews
Shortly after 9:30 a.m., CHP officers and Contra Costa County Fire Protection District responded to a report of a one-car rollover accident by the Loveridge exit at Highway 4. Initially, officials found two of the car occupants, one that had been ejected from the Jeep and another who was stuck under the car. It was only a few moments later when firefighters located the third person, Maurelle Cater, who was also ejected from the vehicle.
The other ejected patient was a woman, whose name has not been released to the public. She did suffer significant injuries from the rollover. As of Monday, June 18, she remains at John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek. According to CHP officers, she is in critical condition but is expected to have a full recovery.
The status of the third person involved in the collision, who also remains unidentified, is currently unknown. They were safely extricated from the Jeep by firefighters and then transferred to an unknown hospital to receive medical attention and treatment for their wounds.
CHP Investigation
CHP has reason to believe that neither Cater or the unnamed woman had their seatbelts on at the time of the crash. They are still currently examining the origin of the accident. It is not suspected that alcohol or drugs were involved in the situation.
