Rollover Accident Near Susanville Causes Major Trauma

On Wednesday, July 15, 2020, a rollover accident near Susanville left one person with major injuries. The collision reportedly happened in the early evening and involved a single passenger vehicle. According to reports, the driver of the vehicle was the only individual involved in the accident. The cause of this crash is still being investigated, and updates on the injured man’s condition had not been released at the time of reporting.

Crash Information

The collision occurred at 4:52 p.m. on westbound Highway 299 near the small community of Alturas a few miles north of Susanville. The driver of a westbound minivan, for unknown reasons, apparently lost control of his vehicle. As a result, the van overturned multiple times. California Highway Patrol (CHP) reports indicate that the minivan rolled around 60 feet down an embankment on the side of the highway and sustained major front-end damage during the incident.

Response

After CHP was notified about the crash, they rushed out emergency responders to the site. Officers reaching the crash scene found the driver of the minivan was critically injured and called for a helicopter ambulance. The helicopter was reportedly en route to the Mercy Medical Center in Redding as of 6:06 p.m.

Investigation

While accident response was conducted, CHP shut down the highway. Initially, officers conducted one-way traffic control. When the helicopter arrived, the highway was completely closed to make room for a safe landing and takeoff. The roadway near the crash remained partially closed while police conducted a preliminary investigation of evidence at the scene.

So far, police have not mentioned likely causal factors of this crash. Even crashes that only involve one vehicle can involve more than one factor. Importantly, many crash factors are non-driver causes like roadway dangers or malfunctioning auto parts.

Rollovers and Liability

When vehicles overturn, especially heavy vehicles like SUVs or minivans, the roof often isn’t able to withstand the impact and caves in. This means that the metal roof intrudes into the cabin, potentially leaving occupants with severe “roof crush injuries.”

With accidents that involve roof crush injuries, the company that manufactured the vehicle is often considered an at-fault party and can be held financially responsible for damages caused during the crash. This means that injured parties may be able to claim payments for their medical bills, lost income, and other damages by filing an injury claim against the company that made their car. Because you need to prove that the roof of the vehicle was weak in order to claim compensation for roof crush injuries, it’s very important to make sure that you preserve the wrecked vehicle as evidence for your case.
