Rollover Accident Injures Four Near Stockton

A single-vehicle accident left a family of four seriously injured on the night of February 23, 2019. The incident occurred along the southbound lanes of Interstate 5 near the Roth Road interchange, just south of Stockton. The four family members were driving home from a ski trip when the motorist reportedly fell asleep at the wheel and lost control of their Honda. The vehicle veered off the roadway and overturned, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP). The four occupants in the Honda were taken to a hospital for treatment of unspecified, serious injuries. An update on their conditions has not yet been released by officials.

How to Avoid Fatigue While Driving

A statistic report by CHP revealed that 6,390 accidents in the state were attributed to drowsy driving in 2016. Of these accidents, 47 resulted in fatal injuries. To avoid fatigue while driving, CHP suggests that drivers exercise the following safety precautions:

  • Avoid traveling for more than eight hours a day
  • Before heading out on a long trip, be sure to get a good night’s sleep
  • Do not consume alcohol before driving. Even a small amount can increase the chances of driver fatigue.
  • Do not drive at times when you are usually sleeping
  • If you start to feel drowsy, pull over in a safe, well-lit area and take a short nap
  • Switch motorists when taking long road trips to share the driving
  • Take breaks every two hours

Signs of Drowsy Driving

Below are some signs that should tell a driver to stop and rest:

  • Difficulty maintaining the position of the vehicle in the traffic lane
  • Eyelids feeling heavy
  • Trouble focusing on the road and daydreaming or yawning
  • Following too closely behind another car
  • Irritability or restlessness
  • Veering onto rumble strips or missing traffic signage

Common Causes of Rollover Accidents

Rollover accidents are some of the most dangerous of all motor vehicle accidents. They occur when a car overturns of tips over onto its roof in a collision. Many of these crashes involve larger vehicles with higher centers of gravities, such as vans, light trucks, and SUVs. Common causes of these auto accidents include road defects, equipment failure, or driver error.

Roof Crush Resistance and Rollover Accidents

When the roof crushes inward in a rollover accident, the chances of traumatic injuries and fatalities are high. This is due to the doors, windshields, or windows opening up or breaking when the roof strikes the pavement. The wide gaps from the deformed shape of the vehicle can cause occupants inside to be ejected from the car. Under Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 216, automakers are responsible for manufacturing vehicles with roofs that provide adequate strength in a rollover. When an automaker fails to do so, they may be held financially responsible for damages incurred from a defective roof.
