Renal Artery Thrombosis in a Car Accident

Renal Artery Thrombosis in a Car Accident

I’m Ed Smith, a Car Accident Lawyer in Sacramento. The kidneys play an essential role in the body. For them to do their job, they require a steady blood supply. This comes from the renal artery,  a vital blood vessel in the abdomen. The artery carries essential nutrients to the rest of the body, such as:

  • Immune Cells
  • Minerals
  • Oxygen
  • Platelets
  • Vitamins

A tear in the vessel could cause internal bleeding. In some situations, the reverse can take place, and a deadly blood clot could develop.

Renal Artery Thrombosis in Auto Accidents is Serious

For someone who is involved in a car accident, there is a risk of sustaining serious injuries. Many of these injuries include bone fractures and bleeds. However, clots can form as well.

According to statistics published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC):

Impacts: Each year, close to one million Americans are impacted by blood clots in some way. Blood clots, such as a deep vein thrombosis, can cause heart attacks, strokes, and pulmonary emboli.

Deaths: Over 100,000 Americans die prematurely every year due to a blood clot.

Circumstances: Blood clots can occur anywhere and can strike at any time. Blood clots often happen when people have a genetic predisposition to them, eat poorly or lead a sedentary lifestyle. They can also develop in auto accidents.

Mechanism of Clot Formation

In a recent case report, a young man was driving on the highway when traffic conditions changed. The driver could not avoid the obstacles in the road and collide with another vehicle. Because of the severity of the crash, EMS was called to the scene. The man was evaluated and taken to a hospital. Further testing showed the patient’s creatinine level was elevated. One of the kidneys was acutely injured. Additional examinations revealed that the patient had suffered a blood clot in the renal artery. On further evaluation, the patient was noted to have sustained a variety of bone fractures in the accident. When bones break, they release their contents into the bloodstream. One of these contents is bone marrow. The bone marrow contains cholesterol crystals that can block the body’s blood vessels. In this case, the blocked vessel was the renal artery. This clot cut off blood flow to the kidneys and led to a severe kidney injury.
