Lyft Service Available for Redding Residents

The ride-sharing app Lyft became available to Redding residents on Thursday, January 26, 2017. Lyft is an alternative option for those who need to get somewhere, but do not have the means to drive themselves.

About Lyft

Logan Green and John Zimmer created Lyft in San Francisco in 2012. It was created as a service of Zimride, a ridesharing outfit that was founded in 2007. Zimride’s main focus was lengthier rides for those passengers who needed to travel out of town. Zimride quickly grew to be the largest ridesharing company in the United States. Lyft stemmed from Zimride for passengers who did not require to be transported such far distances. Lyft is currently the second-largest ride-sharing company in the United States. The Lyft app puts passengers who need a ride together with drivers in the area who are available. After the ride, both the driver and passenger leave a 1-5 star rating on the other. This creates a rating and reputation for both the passenger and the driver.

Ride-Sharing Companies Insurance Requirements

Transportation Network Companies (TNCs) like Lyft and Uber are required to run a criminal background check on all of their drivers, procure a license from the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC), and arrange and run a driver training program. There is also a zero-tolerance viewpoint on alcohol and drug use. Ride-sharing companies are required to carry a minimum of $1 million dollars per accident coverage through their insurance company. The laws on how ride-sharing companies are insured often change and they vary due to the situation.

Ride-Sharing Accidents

Just like any other vehicle, a ride-sharing car and driver can be involved in a wide variety of accidents. A person can be injured as a passenger in a ride-sharing vehicle; a ride-sharing driver can be hurt due to the negligent actions of a non-ride-sharing driver. Some situations that can happen are:

  • Passenger injured in a Uber or Lyft driver’s vehicle
  • A ride-sharing driver can injure a passenger or driver of another vehicle
  • A driver can be involved in a road rage situation
  • A distracted or intoxicated driver can cause an accident.
