Reckless Driver Causes Sacramento Intersection Collision

Reckless Driver Causes Sacramento Intersection Collision

I’m Ed Smith a Sacramento auto accident attorney. A collision in the northern part of Sacramento occurred on April 27 when a reckless driver reportedly ran a red light, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP) and struck another vehicle. At least one injury was reported in the collision.

What Happened in the Collision?

The crash was reported at about 5:41 in the afternoon at the intersection of East Commerce Way and West Elkhorn Boulevard when a gray-colored Toyota pickup ran the red light on Commerce heading toward Rio Linda and struck a Honda sedan. The collision caused the pickup to overturn. The Honda ended up in the westbound lanes, creating a traffic hazard for oncoming vehicles. Tow trucks were called, along with emergency medical units. Personnel had to extricate the truck driver from his pickup. No further information has been released on the number of injuries or conditions of those involved in the crash.

Reckless Driving in California

Reckless driving in California is taken seriously and considered a major violation. It can be charged as either a felony or a misdemeanor, depending on the circumstances. It can cost the violator fines and imprisonment and loss of driving privileges. If it occurs along with a criminal offense such as drunk driving, additional charges and penalties can be filed. In California, drivers who receive a reckless driving charge can be given two points on their driving record, which will remain for three years. Reckless driving is linked to the mental state of the driver.

Characterization of Reckless Drivers

There are four basic types of reckless drivers. These are:

  • Distracted drivers: Distracted drivers are those who busily do other things while driving. These can range from reading, eating or talking on the phone to playing with the radio.
  • Speeding drivers: This is one of the most dangerous forms of reckless driving and the cause of many types of severe car accidents.
  • Impaired drivers: These drivers are under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
  • Aggressive drivers:  This type of driver takes his or her aggression out on other motorists and even pedestrians and cyclists. They often change lanes multiple times, ignore traffic lights and stop signs and tailgate. This sort of behavior can lead to road rage.

Intersection Accidents

Intersections are one of the most common places where car accidents occur. This happens because anywhere from two to six roads converge with multiple options for passing through the intersection or turning. Roughly 40 percent of the accidents that occur each year happen at intersections. Most are caused by inattention or illegal maneuvers or misjudgments about the distance or gap between vehicles. Weather does not seem to be a factor since about 78 percent of intersection accidents happen under clear conditions. Inadequate surveillance plays a big part in intersection crashes as does turning with an obstructed view.

Hazardous Intersections

Some intersections are dangerous in and of themselves. It may be due to poor design, inadequate attention to the number of drivers that are using the intersection on a regular basis or whether roadway traffic control is adequate. Some intersections are well-known as being the scene of frequent accidents. Such crossings may lack a separate lane for turning left. Statistically, 30 percent fewer accidents happen when a left-turn lane is added. Others have inadequate markings, leading to motorist confusion. Still, others have obstructed signage. An injured driver may be able to file a claim against the roadway authority for hazardous conditions.
