Interstate 80 Rear-End Accident Involves Three Vehicles Near Northgate Boulevard

A rear-end accident involving three vehicles occurred in Natomas on May 26 that caused an injury. The accident was reported by the California Highway Patrol (CHP) as occurring along eastbound I-80 just east of Northgate Boulevard shortly before 5:00 in the afternoon. A Ford pickup, Subaru Impreza and Mazda collided for unknown reasons, blocking the number one lane.

Additional Information About the Three-Vehicle Crash

All of the vehicles had to be towed from the scene, and one sustained major rear-end damage. The injured person was examined by first responders with the Sacramento Fire Department, but no additional information was provided. The rear-end accident is being investigated to discover why it occurred and to assign fault.

Causes of a Rear-End Accident

Rear-end collisions are the most common type of traffic accident and are responsible for many injuries and fatalities each year. Even a rear-end accident that occurs at a low speed can result in injuries. Following are some of the common causes of this type of collision:

  • Distracted driving: Distracted drivers are responsible for most traffic accidents these days. A motorist is usually found to be texting or talking on a cell phone. This removes their focus from the task at hand, which is driving. Even though hands-free cell phone use is allowed in California, it has been shown that even this is almost as dangerous.
  • Speeding is another major cause of all types of traffic collisions. A driver who is speeding can lose control of their vehicle more easily and crash into the back of another vehicle. When approaching an intersection or stalled traffic up ahead, they may be going too fast to stop in time to avoid a collision.
  • Drunk drivers and those who use drugs are often the cause of a rear-end accident. Because they have trouble judging distances, tracking with their eyes, and their reflexes are slowed, it can easily lead to a serious collision.
  • Changing lanes on a highway to reach an exit ramp can lead to a rear-end collision. Drivers often speed up to change lanes or make a risky move, which can cause a crash with another vehicle.
  • Mechanical failure in the vehicle can cause a rear-end accident.
  • Government negligence can cause this type of accident. When a vehicle hits a pothole, gravel, or oil in the road or for many other reasons, it can end up causing the car to crash into the one in front. When this happens, the government entity in charge of maintenance can be held liable.

By investigating an accident to collect evidence against the at-fault party, a strong case can be made for a client’s claim. Investigations include accident reconstruction, checking for mistakes in the police report, looking for surveillance camera tapes, examining the roadway for lack of maintenance, and additional techniques.
