A Rancho Cordova bicycle rider suffered major injuries on May 21 in an accident involving a motor vehicle. The collision happened on Rocket Circle between Folsom Boulevard and the El Dorado Freeway around 9:21 in the evening. When California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers arrived at the accident scene, they discovered the SUV that struck the rider had remained at the accident scene.

Rancho Cordova Bicycle Rider Accident Being Investigated

Sacramento Metro Fire District responders arrived at the site and determined the bicyclist had suffered major trauma. That person was transported to a hospital for additional care and evaluation. The investigation into how the collision occurred and the assignment of blame is underway by CHP traffic accident detectives.

Reasons Why a Negligent Motorist Causes a Bicycle Injury Crash

Several reasons can explain why a negligent motorist might strike a bicyclist. Some of the most common causes include:

  • Failure to yield: The driver might fail to yield to the bicyclist at a stop sign, crosswalk or intersection.
  • Distracted driving: The motorist could have been engaged in activities such as texting, talking on the phone, adjusting the radio, or any other distracting behavior while driving, causing them not to notice the bicyclist nearby.
  • Speeding: Driving at excessive speeds can reduce the motorist’s reaction time to the presence of a Rancho Cordova bicycle rider.
  • Driving under the influence: The motorist may have been impaired by drugs or alcohol, adversely affecting their judgment and reaction time.

It is crucial for all drivers to be mindful of these potential causes of bicycle injury crashes and take necessary precautions, especially when sharing the road with bicyclists.

What Damages Can a Rider Recover When a Negligent Driver Causes Their Bicycle Injury Crash?

A Rancho Cordova bicycle rider injured by a negligent driver may be entitled to recover bicyclists for their losses. In California, the recoverable damages might include:

  • Medical expenses: Costs associated with medical treatment, hospitalization, rehabilitation, and any ongoing care or therapy required due to the injuries.
  • Lost income: If injuries prevent bicyclists from working, they may recover lost wages, benefits, and other compensations.
  • Pain/suffering: Compensation for the physical and emotional distress because of the injury accident.
  • Loss of enjoyment of life: Damages for the inability to partake in previously enjoyed activities due to injury.
  • Punitive damages: In certain cases, courts may award punitive damages to penalize the negligent driver for reckless or intentional misconduct.

To secure these damages, the bicyclist must prove the driver’s negligence and its direct link to the accident and resulting injuries. Consulting with an experienced accident attorney can help the injured party navigate the legal complexities and maximize their recovery.
