Plane Crash Near Manchester State Park

Two Survived Plane Crash Near Mendocino Coast

A plane, with two people aboard, crashed in an attempted landing Wednesday morning along the Mendocino coast near Manchester State Park.

What Happened?

The pilot and one passenger were flying near Manchester State Park in a Cessna 180, a popular single-engine aircraft. During their journey, the plane ran out of gas. The pilot maneuvered to make an emergency landing, but the plane flipped over just after initial contact with the ground.

Result of the Crash

The crash occurred in a private field in between two areas of Manchester State Park. No one else is believed to have witnessed the crash. Cal Fire received a call from the pilot just after 11:00 a.m. just after the incident took place. Thankfully, neither the pilot nor passenger sustained life-threatening injuries, although a request was initially made for a medical helicopter. Coast Life Support sent an ambulance while Redwood Coast volunteer and the firefighters of Cal Fire responded to the crash. Nothing is known about those involved in the airplane crash including where they came from or where they were going. The FAA confirmed the plane is not registered under any one person’s name but rather a Limited Liability Company in Delaware.

Private Plane Safety

There are more private pilots climbing into the sky than ever before and with that, plane related accidents are climbing as well. Like the incident in Mendocino county, there are about 5 small airplane crashes per day. This amounts to just under 500 deaths a year. According to the National Transportation Safety Board, most of these crashes are preventable and are a result of user error. Whether a pilot or passenger, it’s your responsibility to be alert during flight and as aware as possible to any aircraft malfunctions. In the case of a stalling aircraft, plan and review your necessary procedures in regaining control often. This is necessary for avoiding panic and being as efficient as possible with the limited time to regain control of the plane.
