Pittsburg Car Accident at Kirker Pass Road

I’m Ed Smith, a Pittsburg car accident lawyer, and I am informing you of one of many recent accidents on Kirker Pass Road near Pittsburg.

Details of the Accident

On May 10th, a black Ford Focus crashed into a telephone pole. According to witness reports, the vehicle was traveling northbound on Kirker Pass Road at an estimated 100 miles per hour. The driver then lost control of the vehicle near the intersection with Hess Road.

Initial reports stated that electrical wires were across all lanes of traffic. Subsequent reports revealed that the accident dropped a live power line. Several motorists drove over these lines before the authorities were able to shut down the roads.

Emergency Services Response to the Accident

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) responded to the accident first as they were already responding to reports of illegal driving behavior in the vicinity. The Pittsburg Police Department shut down Kirker Pass Road at Buchanan Road and the Concord Police Department shut it down at Myrtle Drive. Contra Costa County Fire and American Medical Response (AMR) also responded to the accident.

Injuries from the Accident

Initial reports of the car accident indicated that the three people in the car were seriously injured. Subsequent reports reveal that the driver and both of her passengers escaped with only minor injuries. All three persons were transported to area hospitals by AMR ambulance.

Reports from Before the Accident

CHP received several reports about the vehicle before the accident occurred. According to one caller, the black vehicle that crashed into the pole was being chased by another black vehicle with two males inside. Other callers reported that the two black vehicles were both driving at high rates of speed and had nearly struck several other vehicles. The CHP has not corroborated any of these reports or issued any criminal charges.

Cause of the Accident

Based on witness reports, excessive speed and reckless driving were likely the cause of the accident. The reports of the two black vehicles chasing each other also point to street racing as a potential cause of the accident, but the authorities have not confirmed this.

Larger Cause of the Accident

While speed and reckless driving may have caused the accident, the road where the collision occurred also likely played a major role. Kirker Pass Road is prone to accidents because of its steep grades and sharp turns. Additionally, many people use the road as a shortcut to avoid heavy traffic on Highway 4 during commute hours. This puts a high volume of drivers on an already dangerous road, leading to many accidents. We have seen many of these accidents as Pittsburg’s personal injury lawyers. A few recent accidents are described below.

Other Recent Accidents on Kirker Pass

This accident was one day after two different accidents on Kirker Pass Road that left several people injured. In the first accident, two vehicles collided around 7:15 a.m., but additional details are still unknown. In the second accident, a blue Mitsubishi sedan and a silver Toyota collided, driving one vehicle into a nearby ravine. This accident occurred only 45 minutes after the first. Current information indicates that neither accident caused serious injuries.
