First responders with the Sacramento Fire Department arrived at the scene of the pedestrian injury to assess injuries. It was not reported whether the walker was transported for additional care to a hospital. The accident is being investigated to determine how it occurred.

Pedestrian Injury Accident

Nearly 6,000 pedestrians were killed in traffic accidents in 2017. In addition to this number, almost 150,000 pedestrians were seen in emergency rooms nationwide for non-fatal injuries. Overall, pedestrians are 1.5 times more likely to be injured or killed in a car accident.

Who Is Most at Risk for a Pedestrian Injury Accident?

Of all pedestrians, the following are most at risk for injuries or fatalities in a traffic crash.

  • Children and older adults are at the highest risk.
  • Twenty percent of all people who died in traffic accidents were children in 2017.
  • Walkers who were 65 years of age or older also accounted for 20 percent of all pedestrian deaths and about 10 percent of the injuries.
  • Nearly 50 percent of all fatal pedestrian accidents were found to involve alcohol impairment by the driver.
  • Higher speeds resulted in more serious injuries to pedestrians.

Types of Pedestrian Accidents

There are a variety of different types of pedestrian accidents. Some of the most common are:

  • Backover accidents: This type of accident commonly occurs in parking lots when a vehicle is backing up.
  • Crosswalk accidents: These occur when the walker is in the crosswalk legally and a vehicle fails to yield the right of way.
  • Out of control vehicle: Many times, pedestrians are hit on a sidewalk due to an out of control driver.

Who Is Liable in a Pedestrian Injury Accident?

Liability depends on why the accident occurred. For instance, a driver who is speeding and distracted will be liable for the accident. So is the impaired driver who fails to stop in time at a crosswalk. However, in other cases, a government entity may be held responsible due to poor lighting, inadequately maintained crosswalks, defective light signals and for other reasons.

How an Injury Lawyer Can Help

An injury attorney can help by determining the cause of a pedestrian injury accident and gathering the evidence needed to support the client’s claim. They do that by dispatching their investigative team to the accident site. There, the team interviews witnesses who saw the accident happen and obtains video footage of the collision from traffic cameras and other sources.

The investigative team also reviews the police report for mistakes since they are widely used in negotiations with insurance companies and in court. They perform accident reconstruction that will help determine liability.

Once all this information is gathered, the team of investigators releases it to our injury attorneys. They use the data to build a robust case for our client. It is proven that this approach helps the client not only win his/her case but it increases the amount of compensation that they obtain.
