What Options You May Have for Recovery After a Hit-and-Run Accident

Those hurt in hit-and-run crashes may face challenges in terms of being compensated for their injuries and losses incurred. That is because the driver responsible for the incident left the scene, leaving injured parties at a loss and unsure of what steps to take next. If an injured person has uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage (UM and UIM) on their insurance policy, they may be able to file a claim under UM protection. What is great about this type of coverage is that it may extend to cyclists, pedestrians, passengers, and drivers injured in accidents caused by hit-and-run drivers.

In situations where the at-fault party is identified, an injury lawyer may help a claimant bring a personal injury case against them and their insurance company. Conversely, if the other party cannot be located, an attorney can work with private investigators to track them down. If all efforts are unsuccessful, recourse may be sought through UM coverage or that of a household member’s plan. The latter is a potential option for recovery so long as the injured party was not excluded from that insurance policy. Either option for recovery will be subject to the limits of the policy.
