Pedestrian Accident Seriously Injures Man Near Fresno

I’m Ed Smith, a Fresno car accident lawyer. A man in a wheelchair was trying to cross a street in Fresno during the nighttime hours of Monday, October 23, 2017. Unfortunately, the man was struck by an oncoming vehicle and was hospitalized for his injuries.

We wish for a speedy and full recovery for the man that suffered injuries in this traumatizing pedestrian accident.

What Happened?

A man was attempting to cross Gettysburg Avenue in the vicinity of Effie Street in a wheelchair at approximately 7:30 pm. At the same time, a pickup truck was approaching the area and was unable to avoid the man. This resulted in a serious pedestrian accident.

Was the Man Injured?

Emergency responders were dispatched to the scene of the pedestrian accident. They located the injured man upon arrival and conducted a medical evaluation. The man appeared to have suffered critical injuries and was transported to a hospital for treatment. The last update indicated that he was in stable condition.

What Caused the Pedestrian Accident?

Authorities from the Fresno Police Department are in charge of the pedestrian accident investigation. Officials are unsure of who is liable for the collision. The driver of the pickup truck remained at the scene and was cooperative with the investigation. Investigators conducted a sobriety test on the motorist, who ultimately passed. The pedestrian that was injured in the incident was identified as a man in his 60’s who resided in the area. It is not yet known whether that pedestrian was impaired at the time of the accident.

Injuries from Pedestrian Accidents

When a pedestrian is hit by a vehicle, the nature of their injuries vary. The kinds of injuries sustained are influenced by factors such as the age of the pedestrian, height of the motor vehicle, and the speed of the vehicle. Elderly persons are most likely to suffer traumatic injuries in such accidents in part due to sensory issues, executive functioning and physical problems they go through as they age. The common injuries that elderly pedestrians suffer include pelvic fractures, femur fractures and traumatic brain injuries. It is vital for a motorist to remain at the scene of a pedestrian accident to render aid until authorities or medical personnel arrive. Leaving a pedestrian to suffer from their injuries could lead to a wrongful death claim and civil penalties once the driver is detained.

Insurance in Pedestrian Accidents

When a pedestrian is struck by a hit-and-run driver, that motorist is likely to not have insurance. In these situations, an injured party should resort to their own insurance policy if they carry Uninsured/Under-insured Motorist Protection (UM/UIM). This type of insurance usually covers policy holders in the event that they are hit by someone without adquate insurace limits.
