Pedestrian Accident Injures Woman Near Fresno

A recent pedestrian accident in Fresno left one woman hospitalized. The collision occurred at approximately 2:45 in the afternoon at the intersection of Blackstone Avenue and Garland Avenue. Two female pedestrians were attempting to cross from the north side of Garland Avenue to the south side in a marked crosswalk. While doing so, one of the walkers was struck by an oncoming vehicle driven by a 65-year-old woman. Medical personnel responding to the accident transported the victim to a hospital for treatment of serious injuries. Officials have not yet released an update regarding her condition.

Pedestrian Safety Tips

Pedestrian awareness is key to avoiding accidents on the road. Walkers can do so by following these safety tips:

  • Avoid calling, texting, or listening to music on a cell phone with earbuds as this may compromise your perception of your surroundings.
  • Cross streets at marked crosswalks and intersections. If these are not available, cross in a well-lit area where a driver’s view of walkers is not presumably obstructed.
  • Face the flow of traffic when walking on the street if sidewalks are not available.
  • Follow all signage and pedestrian traffic signals.
  • Make eye contact with drivers before crossing.
  • Maximize your presence to oncoming traffic at night by wearing bright-colored, reflective clothing or carrying a flashlight.

Common Pedestrian Accident Injuries

Accident-related injuries are often catastrophic for pedestrians. Following are the most common types of injuries sustained in such accidents:

  • Abdominal Trauma: Blunt abdominal trauma may result in bruising of the abdomen to internal bleeding and organ damage. Abdominal trauma can be life-threatening if not treated appropriately.
  • Bone Fractures: Fractures may be serious anywhere but even more so when it involves the pelvis, hips, or spinal cord.
  • Chest Trauma: Injuries to the chest may include heart damage, severe bruising, and rib fractures which can lead to a punctured lung. Treatment for chest trauma varies upon the extent of the damage.
  • Head Injuries: These may range from concussions to traumatic brain injuries, including brain swelling, skull fractures, and hemorrhage. Severe head injuries often result in permanent changes in cognitive abilities and other functions.
  • Spinal Cord Trauma: Any type of trauma to the spinal column may cause severe or permanent damage. In some extreme cases, partial or complete paralysis may occur.
