Collision at Florin Road Intersection Injures Female Pedestrian

A pedestrian accident that resulted in a major injury happened in Sacramento County on October 7 after a collision with a motor vehicle. The injury collision occurred around 12:22 in the afternoon at the intersection of Florin Road and Greenhaven Drive south of Frank Seymour Park. The accident was reported to the California Highway Patrol (CHP) by a bank worker nearby who said the vehicle had major front windshield damage.

Injured Pedestrian Transported to Hospital With Major Injury

Upon the arrival of CHP officers and first responders with the Sacramento Fire Department, an injured female pedestrian was found lying in some bushes. The patient was transported by medics to Kaiser South for the treatment of major injuries. The pedestrian accident is under investigation by authorities to determine how it occurred.

Causes of an Intersection Pedestrian Accident

Many pedestrians go out of their way to cross a street in a location with marked crosswalks and lights thinking it is safer. Although statistics say that marked crosswalks are safer, they aren’t that much better than unmarked street corners. The layout and visibility are important factors, but negligence by a driver or other entity often leads to an injury or fatality. Some of the other causes of a pedestrian accident include:

  • A driver running a red light or stop sign is probably the most common cause of a pedestrian accident since the person on foot is caught in the crosswalk or has just stepped off the curb.
  • Defective or mistimed traffic or crossing lights can cause an accident involving a pedestrian. Although motorists should realize they have to yield the right of way to someone walking across the street even if the light changes, they don’t always do that.
  • Obscured street corners can be caused by bad lighting or overgrown shrubbery and trees. The government entity in charge of maintenance may be held financially liable for a pedestrian accident that occurs for these reasons. Since the statute of limitations for filing against a government entity is shorter, having an injury lawyer assist you in ensuring documents are filed on time can be helpful.
  • Drunk drivers cause many accidents, including those involving pedestrians. Because a drunk driver cannot accurately judge distance, has slowed reflexes and has problems staying in their lane, it can easily lead to a collision with someone on foot.
  • Distracted drivers have become the number one reason for a traffic collision. By taking their hands, eyes and mental focus off the road by texting, talking or changing a radio station, it can cause a pedestrian accident with devastating consequences.
  • Fatigue can cause an accident involving a pedestrian, especially if it’s mid-afternoon or late at night. A fatigued driver reacts in a way similar to someone who is drunk and can drift out of their lane or even fall asleep while driving.
