Highway 299 Rollover Crash Fatally Injures One

On Sunday, September 20, 2020, police located a vehicle after it had wrecked as the result of a fatal Highway 299 rollover crash. California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that one person was found fatally injured from the wreck. The identity of the decedent has not yet been released by county officials. Additionally, responders indicated that they were unable to determine whether or not any passengers were inside of the car at the time of the accident.

Incident Details

According to CHP, a vehicle was driving on Highway 299 to the west of the small community of Junction City between Big Bar and Burnt Ranch when, for reasons that are not currently known, the driver apparently lost control. The vehicle eventually left the road and overturned, rolling around 800 feet down a steep embankment off the side of the highway. The car finally came to a rest submerged in the Trinity River.

Hawkins Bare Fire Department personnel used climbing gear to repel down through “rugged terrain” to the accident site. At the site, responders sent a diver into the river to search the vehicle. The diver determined that the driver had been fatally injured but was reportedly unable to access the passenger compartment.

Investigation

CHP is conducting a full investigation into this incident and is attempting to determine what could have caused the collision to happen. At this point, no suspected factors have been mentioned by investigating officials. Even crashes that only involve one vehicle can be caused by more than one thing and frequently involve non-driver crash factors. Such factors include hazardous vehicle parts, defective roads, and more.

Rollover Collisions

Car accidents that involve overturned vehicles have a disproportionately high injury rate. This is partially because these crashes typically happen when vehicles are traveling at higher speeds. However, another major factor is weak car roofs. If a car’s roof isn’t designed to keep occupants safe or is constructed out of weak or cheap materials, it is much more likely to cave inward during a rollover. In many cases, this leaves people seriously hurt.

Car manufacturers have a duty to ensure their products are safe. For this reason, if the roof of a vehicle is not strong enough to protect vehicle occupants, the company may be liable to pay for damages. However, your attorney needs to be able to determine that the vehicle’s roof was improperly built. This means that it’s important to preserve the wrecked vehicle.

Families affected by fatal car accidents face serious challenges and often feel overwhelmed.
