One Dead After Fatal Butte County Crash

On Tuesday, October 1, 2019, one person was left with fatal injuries as the result of a Butte County crash. County officials have stated that investigators are currently trying to determine the identity of the decedent. According to police, the crash happened at night on a rural highway location and only involved a single-vehicle vehicle. Additionally, the California Highway Patrol (CHP), is investigating possible causes of the incident.

Accident Details

CHP indicated that the crash took place at about 10:15 p.m. on Highway 149. A young man who investigators believe to be between the ages of 17 and 19 had been driving on 149 near Shippee Road around 9 miles to the north of the city of Oroville. Officers stated that the driver apparently lost control of his vehicle before veering off the road and onto the right-hand shoulder. The car then struck a guardrail before overturning and falling down into a nearby ravine. The car reportedly came to a rest on its roof next to a creek at the bottom of the ravine.

The wrecked vehicle was first discovered by a Caltrans employee who immediately contacted CHP to report the crash. CHP sent out responders directly after receiving the call, and when responders arrived, they found the driver still inside the vehicle. Emergency personnel used special equipment to extricate the driver from the vehicle and determined that he had suffered major injuries. Sadly, the young man was declared deceased at the scene of the wreck.

Investigation

As police continue to investigate what may have caused this crash, no suspected factors have been mentioned. In cases like this, where no involved drivers are able to tell officers what happened, it can be difficult for investigators to fully understand the events leading up to the accident. However, an experienced attorney can perform their own investigation and represent the interests of the decedent’s family. Your lawyer should be able to determine if the accident involved any negligence, such as faulty auto parts, phantom drivers, or serious roadway defects.

Rollover Collisions

Rollover crashes like this one are especially dangerous, and these types of collisions are proven to cause more fatalities than other kinds of accidents. Many of these fatal injuries occur because the roof of the vehicle isn’t strong enough and crushes during the rollover. When cars fail to keep drivers or passengers safe during a crash, the company that manufactured the vehicle may be liable to pay for the damages that the collision caused. By filing a wrongful death claim against a negligent party such as a vehicle manufacturer, families are often able to recover for a variety of damages and receive the financial stability they deserve during an emotionally difficult time.
