Off-Duty Redding Police Officer Injured in Alleged DUI

Off-Duty Redding Police Officer Hurt in Alleged DUI

On Saturday, August 22, 2020, an off-duty Redding police officer suffered serious injuries during a local car accident. According to the Redding Police Department (RPD), the other driver involved in the collision has been placed under arrest on charges of driving under the influence causing serious bodily harm. Updates on the condition of the injured individual have not yet been reported.

Crash Details

The accident took place at around 7:30 a.m. at the intersection of Hartnell Avenue and Airport Road on the eastern side of Redding. Police indicated that a 41-year-old woman was driving over the speed limit and struck the off-duty officer’s vehicle inside of the intersection. The collision caused the officer’s car to overturn and roll down a nearby embankment, leaving him trapped inside the wrecked vehicle.

Responders arrived at the accident scene shortly after it took place. Officials at the site performed an emergency extrication to remove the officer from his car and determined that both involved drivers had suffered serious injuries. Both individuals were placed on ambulances and driven to nearby hospitals for immediate care. After being given medical treatment, the suspected DUI driver was transferred into police custody and booked into the Shasta County Jail.

RPD has reported that the collision remains under investigation at this time and that it will be reviewed by the department’s traffic unit.

Rollover Accidents and Injuries

Data from national research groups indicate that only two percent of U.S. car accidents are rollovers, but that ten percent of fatal collisions involve overturned vehicles. This disparity shows that these accidents are especially dangerous. While there are a few reasons that this is the case, one of the most important factors is weak vehicle roofs.

During a rollover, a significant amount of force is usually put onto the vehicle’s roof. If the roof is constructed out of weak materials or isn’t designed correctly, it may crush as the result of a rollover, leaving occupants seriously hurt. In these cases, the company that made the vehicle is often considered a negligent party to the accident as is considered either partially or fully responsible for accident damages.

However, your attorney needs to be able to determine whether or not the vehicle’s roof was improperly made in order to hold these companies liable. For this reason, it’s critical to make sure that you preserve the vehicle as evidence following the accident.

Calling an Attorney

Recovering from a car accident injury can be a very difficult process. Not only is injury recovery physically painful, but it’s also often stressful because of financial issues. The necessary medical procedures for a crash injury can be costly, and many people suffer a loss of income because of their trauma.

To make sure that you are able to move forward with your life and recover fully following a crash, it’s important to reach out to a lawyer who can help you with your case.
