A fatal pedestrian crash with a car occurred in North Sacramento on November 6. The collision occurred at Northgate Boulevard, where it connects with Winterhaven Avenue around 9:00 p.m., according to the Sacramento Police Department. When officers arrived, they discovered an unresponsive pedestrian on the road. The officers began administering aid, which was taken over by Sacramento Fire Department emergency responders when they arrived.

Injured Walker Dies at Hospital Following Fatal Pedestrian Crash

Although the pedestrian was transported to a hospital, they unfortunately did not survive. The vehicle driver who struck the person on foot stayed at the accident scene and cooperated with the officers investigating the accident. The pedestrian’s identity will be released by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office once the family has received notification of the death.

The Dangers of Three-Way Intersections

Three-way intersections often don’t provide traffic lights or crosswalks for pedestrians. Because of the higher speeds of vehicles along the main route, it can be dangerous when someone wants to cross the street, especially after dark and if the roadway contains multiple lanes. Pedestrians may have to walk further to reach an intersection with traffic and crossing signals. However, it is unsafe to do so, especially after dark. Despite this, drivers have to use caution to look out for pedestrians all the time to avoid a fatal pedestrian crash.

Losing a Loved One in a Fatal Pedestrian Crash

When a loved one dies in a fatal pedestrian crash and the motor vehicle driver is at fault, the family or estate administrator for the deceased may place a wrongful death claim. However, only one claim may be filed. Generally, the spouse and children of the deceased are the ones who place a claim for wrongful death. Damages that the family can recover include:

  • The cost of the decedent’s funeral and cremation or burial can be compensated.
  • Earnings of the decedent until they would have reached retirement are recoverable as well as their benefits, such as insurance, pension, bonuses, etc.
  • The spouse may recover financial compensation for their loss of moral support, affection and consortium.
  • The family children, which includes any child who received half their support from the decedent, may recover compensation for their loss of parental nurturing and guidance.
  • Compensation may be sought for the loss of household assistance provided by the decedent. By household assistance, it refers to chores around the home the decedent normally performed, such as lawn and vehicle care, tax preparation, cooking, childcare and others.
  • In some instances, loss of inheritance is recoverable by beneficiaries in the decedent’s will.
