Norovirus Spreading in Yolo County

I’m Ed Smith, a Sacramento Norovirus Lawyer. It is important to keep your children healthy and safe when attending public schools. The norovirus, similar to influenza, has recently been spreading to school districts all across Yolo County. Since last Friday, the number of confirmed cases has increased from 950 to over 1000 as of Monday. The alarming rate that people are contracting the disease already has Yolo County officials concerned.

School Districts Affected

Out of the 65 public schools in Yolo county, 40 are affected by the virus. The following school districts are included:

Also hear from parents, especially those in the Woodland Joint Unified School District, where the illness is most concentrated.

The virus is not an airborne disease but does spread very easily through contact with an infected individual and surface or by consuming food and drink that has been contaminated.

Gastrointestinal Disease

The disease affects the gastrointestinal system by causing stomach and intestinal inflammation. Symptoms can last up to 3 days. Different symptoms include vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, stomach pain, and fever. After being infected with the disease, an individual can still be contagious even after symptoms have receded. Health Officials are advising all to wash their hands regularly and to stay home for an additional 48 hours once the symptoms have finally stopped.

Options for treatment are very limited. Rest and drink plenty of fluids until the symptoms pass. If symptoms continue past 2 days, consult your physician at once.

Differences between the Stomach Flu and Norovirus

Although the symptoms appear to be very similar, the norovirus and influenza (stomach flu) are very different. The duration of influenza far outlasts that of the norovirus and is a good distinguisher between the two. The symptoms of influenza can last up to two weeks where norovirus is only one to three days. Influenza can also show signs of respiratory symptoms such as coughing, sore throat, runny nose, and congestion. Norovirus does not have any symptoms affecting the respiratory system. Both diseases spread through physical contact with the virus. Due to the lack of sneezing and coughing symptoms, norovirus can be less contagious than influenza. Whether you have influenza or norovirus, it is important to drink enough fluids, as symptoms can lead to severe dehydration.

If you or your child is sick, here are some symptoms to recognize dehydration according to the CDC.

  • A decrease in daily urination
  • Dry throat and mouth
  • Dizziness when standing
  • Children crying with few or no tears while also being unusually fussy or sleepy.
