New Mesothelioma Treatment Option

I’m Ed Smith, a Sacramento Mesothelioma Lawyer. Mesothelioma has been a focus of medical research for years due to its ubiquity throughout various occupations exposed to asbestos. The research on mesothelioma has started to yield new treatment options that can improve the mesothelioma prognosis for the benefit of patients everywhere.

Current Treatment Options

If patients report that they are suffering from mesothelioma symptoms, the physician will use imaging and possible biopsies to confirm one of several different types of mesothelioma, such as pleural mesothelioma or peritoneal mesothelioma. Then, the physician will discuss a variety of treatment options with the patient, ranging from surgery to medical therapy or a combination of both. While patients generally have some success with these treatment options, recent research out of France has revealed a new potential treatment option that could change the standard of therapy for mesothelioma treatment.

Curcumin and Mesothelioma Cells

Curcumin is the active ingredient in the popular ingredient turmeric and has shown potential as a mesothelioma treatment option. A French study revealed that curcumin has the potential to slow the growth of mesothelioma tumor cells and reduce the total size of the tumors themselves. The ingredient has been studied in the past due to its potential for anti-inflammatory properties. French researchers removed mesothelioma cells from rats that had been exposed to asbestos. Researchers placed the mesothelioma cells into different groups and exposed them to varying amounts of curcumin to find the right treatment dose that was needed to shrink the tumor mass and kill the mesothelioma cells. This ideal dose was then translated to the next step.

Treatment with Curcumin in the Rats was Next

Once the proper dose was calculated, the researchers started treatment with curcumin while the tumors were still in the peritoneal cavities of the rats. The tumor load was measured at various points throughout the treatment process and the total tumor mass was significantly reduced at the end of the treatment protocol. Combined with other research that has demonstrated the potential of curcumin to halt the growth of new blood vessels in tumors (starving the tumors of their nutrient supply, causing them to shrink), this data demonstrates promising results for patients living with mesothelioma everywhere. As more research is performed on curcumin, it could lead to a revolution in the manner that mesothelioma is treated, leading to a reduced morbidity and mortality rate for patients diagnosed with this deadly lung disease.
