Interstate 80 Accident Causing Injury Involves Four Vehicles

A major injury accident was reported in Natomas following a highway collision involving multiple vehicles. The crash happened just before 4:00 p.m. along westbound I-80 just west of Truxel Road. The report issued by the California Highway Patrol (CHP) stated that it involved a Kia Soul, Ford F-150 Raptor pickup, Nissan SUV, and a Tesla.

Two Vehicles Leave Roadway in Major Injury Accident

The vehicles in the crash sustained major damage and had to be towed from the accident scene. This included the Kia, which had severe damage to its front and rear, and the Nissan, which showed major front-end damage. Two of the vehicles reportedly overshot and exited the roadway.

Accident Scene Cleared in About an Hour

Multiple patients were reported by authorities. At least one person was transported to UC Davis Medical Center with a major injury by Sacramento Fire Department responders. It took authorities about an hour to clear the accident scene. The CHP is conducting an investigation into the major injury accident to find out how it occurred and place fault.

How Multiple-Vehicle Accidents Happen

On highways and urban streets, the main reasons for multiple-vehicle accidents are distracted or reckless driving. The majority of major injury crashes initiate when one driver strikes the rear compartment of another. This pushes the lead vehicle into the car in front of them, causing a chain reaction. On a busy street or highway, cars often are bumper to bumper, laying the groundwork for a series of rear-end collisions

As vehicles crash into one another, some may be pushed into an adjacent lane and be struck by traffic in that lane. Additionally, some drivers may try to veer out of the accident lane to avoid a major injury and cause a crash.

Major Injury in a Multiple-Vehicle Accident

A multiple-vehicle accident often has serious injury associated with it. Some of the most common are:

  • Cervical strain: This type of injury is frequently referred to as whiplash. This is because the rapid back and forth movement of the head and upper back resembles the motion of a whip when it is snapped. A cervical strain can result in significant pain in the neck and upper back (thoracic area). For many people, the pain subsides in six months with rest, therapy and analgesics. However, some will present with persistent pain for a year or longer. Cervical strain may interfere with work, depending on the type of employment, and require long-term rehabilitation therapy.
  • Herniated disk: There are seven vertebrae in the cervical area (neck). Each disk is separated from the other by a gel-like cushion that prevents them from rubbing on each other or on the nerves that pass through them from the spinal cord. On some occasions, such as a rear-end accident, the gel will be forced out of its sac and leak into the adjacent area. Pressure on the nerves will then ensue. This major injury can cause significant, unremitting pain that may require surgical intervention.
  • Spinal cord damage: In some multiple-vehicle collisions a spinal cord major injury occurs. This is often due to vehicles being hit more than once as cars bounce off of one another. Serious injury and spinal cord damage can lead to paralysis and long-term disability.

Determining Fault

When multiple vehicles are involved, the complexity of the accident requires intensive investigation. We send our investigators to the scene to perform accident reconstruction techniques and obtain surveillance footage of the crash. They interview witnesses and review police reports to acquire additional evidence. Our attorneys use this data to build a strong case for our clients.
