Napa Man Dies in Pedestrian Accident

Authorities of the Napa County Sheriff’s Office have identified a man who lost his life in an area crash on Saturday, April 13, 2019. The accident involved a vehicle and a pedestrian who suffered fatal trauma. The decedent was identified two days later as Erik Keith Woodward, a 25-year-old Napa local. I would like to extend my support and sympathy to Mr. Woodward’s loved ones while they are grieving over their terrible loss.

Accident Information

California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers reported that the accident happened on Highway 29 at approximately 9:00 p.m. in the area of the Napa Premium Outlets shopping center. Woodward had been walking along the roadway shoulder on the northbound side of Highway 29 just south of the intersection of First Street. While walking, Woodward attempted to cross the highway and was crossing over the northbound fast lane when he was struck by a passing 2001 GMC.

Officers were called to the accident scene right away. Responders found Woodward with severe injuries. Tragically, he could not be treated and was pronounced deceased at the collision scene at 9:12 p.m. Responders also stated that the driver of the GMC sustained minor injuries during the incident.

Investigation

CHP is currently investigating this collision in order to find out what factors were involved. While a full report of suspected factors has not yet been released, the 51-year-old man who had been driving the vehicle told officers that he was unable to steer his vehicle away from the pedestrian in order to avoid a crash. Officers stated that the driver did not show any signs of impairment.

Pedestrian accidents are a real danger, especially at nights or in situations where there is poor visibility. Many times, issues such as a lack of adequate lighting or poor roadway design can cause accidents that otherwise could have been avoided. Other common pedestrian crash factors include auto product defects, distracted driving, and more.

Calling an Attorney

After losing someone that you care about, it is normal to experience intense grief, and many find it difficult to keep up with the demands of daily life while mourning over their loss. Because this time can be so stressful, many people want to delay contacting an attorney. However, negligent parties and insurers are usually quick to start defending themselves from liability. Talking to a lawyer early on can be vital in claiming the damages that you are owed for your loss including money for lost income, funeral expenses, and emotional trauma.
