Napa Crash Injures Two Motorcyclists

Two motorcyclists were injured during a multiple-vehicle car accident that took place in Napa County on Wednesday, May 22, 2019. The accident reportedly involved four vehicles including two motorcycles and two passenger cars. California Highway Patrol (CHP) authorities reported that one of the motorcyclists, identified as a 27-year-old Modesto resident, suffered serious injuries. The other motorcyclist, a 31-year-old Brentwood resident, was left with only minor injuries, but still received treatment at a nearby hospital. Updates on the condition of the Modesto man remain unavailable.

Crash Information

The collision took place on Highway 121 to the north of the Vichy Avenue intersection. The two motorcyclists had been driving north on the highway at around 11:00 a.m. on a 2007 KTM and a 2015 Harley Davidson. Police say that the motorcyclists were traveling at around 35 miles an hour and were riding in a tightly packed group of motorcycles when they began to navigate an ascending rightward curve in the highway.

At the same time, a 46-year-old man from Virginia and a 70-year-old Napa resident were heading south on the highway in separate vehicles, approaching the location of the motorcyclists. The Modesto man reportedly began to travel over the highway median while he was navigating the curve. Police say he attempted to correct his vehicle, but could not do so in time to avoid the oncoming vehicle of the Napa resident, a 2018 Ford. The motorcycle struck the Ford’s driver-side mirror and scraped the left side of the vehicle before colliding with the rear tire, causing the bike to flip over.

The motorcycle and rider slid a short distance and eventually struck the front bumper of the Virginia man’s 2015 GMC. The motorcycle finally came to a stop in the southbound highway lane. The Modesto man was left lying on the northbound side of the highway.

The second motorcyclist reportedly recognized that he would not be able to avoid a crash and laid his bike down, sliding into the southbound lane. Both motorcyclists stayed lying down on the highway until medical help arrived.

Response and Investigation

When emergency staff arrived at the collision scene, they discovered that both motorcyclists had suffered trauma including one severe injury. Both men were placed on an ambulance and driven to the Queen of the Valley Hospital for treatment. No further injuries were reported by officials.

CHP has stated that they are investigating possible causes of the collision. So far, officers have not suggested any factors that may have been involved, and no arrests have been made in relation to the crash.

While it is currently unknown what caused this crash to take place, motorcycle accidents are commonly caused by factors such as auto product defects, medical emergencies, dangerous roadway design, reckless driving, and more.
