Injured Transferred to San Francisco General Hospital After Multiple-Vehicle Crash

A multiple-vehicle crash on Interstate 80 in San Francisco sent one person to the hospital recently. The accident happened at 11:44 in the morning in the vicinity of Bryant Street. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) said a Penske truck and a Toyota sedan were both involved in the multiple-vehicle crash, however, they did not reveal how the crash occurred or who was at fault. The injured individual was transported to San Francisco General Hospital for further evaluation and treatment. An investigation into the multiple-vehicle crash is ongoing.

Head Injuries in a Multiple-Vehicle Crash

Side impact is a common feature of a crash involving multiple vehicles. This can lead to serious head injuries because of the lack of protection. Overall, those involved in a side-impact accident are 33 percent more likely to suffer a traumatic head injury.

According to a study from the University of Rochester, the number and severity of head injuries in side-impact collisions surpass that of head-on collisions. In addition, the study showed that head injuries in side-impact crashes were found to be more severe and traumatizing. Fatalities due to traumatic head injuries in side-impact crashes range from 41 to 64 percent. Females are at a higher risk of TBI than males, possibly due to the greater neck strength in men.

Protection From TBIs in Side-Impact Crashes

Side airbags, available on some vehicles, are shown to protect drivers from impact injuries. Manufacturers are moving in this direction, and motorists are urged to choose a vehicle with this protection installed.

A Multiple-Vehicle Crash on a Highway

Multiple-vehicle accidents on a highway are some of the most dangerous traffic collisions. Since the accident collision can involve two or more vehicles, the possibility of being seriously injured is real. Even with multiple lanes, highways leave little room for a vehicle to avoid a crash and almost guarantee that other vehicles will be involved.

Another problem is that safety devices such as airbags deploy only once. After that, the airbag is of no use in preventing injuries. In a typical multiple-vehicle crash, a single vehicle can be hit repeatedly. When this happens, the occupants are exposed to traumatic injuries and fatalities.

How to Avoid a Multiple-Vehicle Crash

There are ways a driver can avoid a multiple-vehicle accident. Some of the most common are:

  • Be ready for obstacles: On a highway, avoiding debris on the road by swerving away is a surefire way to cause a collision. It is much better anticipating what you can do ahead of time. Keep a lookout for spaces in the traffic flow.
  • Don’t be distracted: Talking on the phone or texting means that you will not be able to focus on the road. This can lead to a highway accident, particularly if there is a sudden traffic slowdown.
  • Avoid tailgating: It is vital that drivers leave adequate space between their vehicle and others. By doing this, drivers give themselves wiggle room to avoid hitting a nearby vehicle.
  • Be ready for inclement driving conditions: Check your vehicle to make sure it can handle inclement weather. This ranges from foggy to wet conditions as well as heat. The latter can cause tires to explode, and making sure the tire tread is adequate is important.
  • Brake and steering problems: Brake failure or a loss of steering can cause problems and multiple-vehicle crashes. Check your brakes and make sure that steering fluid is adequate.
  • Watch your speed: Speeding is often a factor in a multiple-vehicle crash. Driving over the speed limit or too fast for conditions can cause the driver to lose control and be unable to stop in time. Remember, you can get a speeding ticket even if you are driving at the speed limit if the weather is bad. Drivers are expected to adjust their speed to match weather-related conditions.

How a Law Firm Investigates a Multiple-Vehicle Crash

Determining liability in a multiple-vehicle accident can be complicated. At our firm, we send our investigative team to the accident site to examine the factors that led up to the crash. The team will use reconstruction techniques to see if the drivers were behaving negligently by speeding or failing to obey traffic rules. Distraction is an important reason such accidents occur, and it is possible to use cell phone records to see if drivers were texting.

Our investigative team also obtains videos that are available from traffic surveillance cameras or other sources. We review police and insurance reports to check for mistakes as well. Once all evidence is compiled, our lawyers use it to build a strong case for our clients.
