Six patients were reported to have been transported to hospitals, some with major injuries. The vehicles were both towed from the scene. An examination of the accident to determine fault and what happened to cause the crash is underway by CHP traffic investigators.

Impact Speeds in a Collision Can Influence the Extent of Trauma

A two-vehicle wreck at a crossroads can cause serious injuries, especially if it involves a head-on or T-bone crash. Those driving on a highway usually travel at much higher speeds than on surface streets, and the sudden impact can intensify trauma in this situation.

Why Intersection Accidents Happen

There are a number of reasons why an accident can occur at an intersection or crossroad. Crossroads on rural highways tend to have less traffic, which means a driver may not be looking for another motorist pulling out from the side. Because the highway driver is going at a faster speed, they may not have enough time to stop to avoid a crash.

Some types of driver negligence are also common causes, including:

  • Drivers are less likely to obey speed limits on a rural road due to less police presence and traffic.
  • Distracted drivers are often talking on their cell phones, texting, monitoring GPS, or changing the radio station. Because there is less traffic, they don’t feel the need to be as alert as they would on a road with more vehicles.
  • In many intersection accidents, drunk or drugged drivers are at fault. Due to impaired judgment, poor reflexes, and possibly blurred vision, intoxicated motorists cannot judge distances.
  • Tailgating is a problem along country highways. Tailgaters may become impatient and pass in a risky location.
