Motorcyclist Seriously Injured Following Redding Crash

A local collision involving two vehicles left a motorcyclist with serious injuries on the morning of Thursday, May 23, 2019. Officers of California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that the accident happened in Redding and took place at high speeds, which may have contributed to the severity of the collision. According to reports, no other individuals suffered major injuries during the incident. Additionally, no updates have been released by hospital staff regarding the condition of the injured motorcyclist.

Crash Information

The collision took place at about 10:20 a.m. A motorcyclist had been driving on Highway Interstate 5 on the northbound side of the roadway between Riverside Avenue and Knighton road. The motorcyclist was reportedly traveling at a speed of somewhere between 80 and 100 miles per hour while “lane splitting,” a legal technique motorcyclists use to pass traffic while traveling between highway lanes. For unknown reasons, the motorcyclist collided with the rear-end of a gold-colored Jeep SUV. According to police, the speed limit on this particular stretch of highway had been reduced to 55 miles per hour due to construction.

Additionally, it was initially reported that the collision involved a third vehicle which was identified as a blue 2010 Dodge pickup truck. However, a spokesperson from CHP later corrected the report and indicated that only the motorcycle and Jeep were involved in this accident.

Response

CHP stated that emergency response teams were sent to the crash location directly after they received a notification via phone call regarding the incident. Upon arriving at the crash site, medical officials discovered that the motorcyclist had sustained severe injuries. The man was placed on an ambulance and rushed to an area trauma center to be given immediate medical care. According to reports, the single occupant of the SUV did not suffer any physical injuries.

Investigation

Officers of CHP are attempting to determine all of the factors that caused this accident to happen and are conducting a full investigation into the collision. However, the only factor that has been mentioned so far is traveling at unsafe speeds. Common factors involved in motorcycle accidents like this one include defective motorcycle parts, hazards in the road, medical issues, driver impairment, and more.
