I-5 Accident with Motor Vehicle Injures Motorcycle Rider

A motorcyclist injury occurred in Sacramento on January 13 following a crash with a passenger vehicle. The collision was reported around 7:16 in the morning along Interstate 5 northbound just north of the Fruitridge Road entrance ramp. The incident report by the California Highway Patrol (CHP) stated that the motorist, driving a Nissan Altima, called in the accident and remained at the scene.

Sac Fire emergency responders arrived at the site to discover the motorcycle and rider lying in one of the lanes. Fortunately, the injuries suffered by the motorcycle rider were not found to be serious. The motorcyclist injury accident is being investigated by the CHP to discover how it occurred and to assign fault.

Motorcyclist Injury Accidents

Motorcycle accidents are common in the United States, in which close to 2,000 motorcyclists died in 2018. The likelihood of dying is 27 times higher than if the individual is riding in a passenger vehicle. The reason for the high number of injuries and deaths is the total lack of protection a motorcyclist has relative to that of a passenger vehicle occupant. In addition, although passenger vehicle drivers are attuned to other vehicles on the road, they often fail to see those on motorcycles. In California, some motorcyclists also lane split, which can be a dangerous practice if the traffic is moving at more than 30 mph.

Injuries Prominent in Motorcycle Accidents

Motorcyclists are prone to a variety of different injuries. These include:

  • Head trauma: Traumatic brain injury is one of the most serious problems a motorcyclist can face in an accident. Motorcyclists have a double risk of head trauma. The rider’s head can be injured by the vehicle itself. However, it can also be injured by landing on the ground. Head injuries vary from a simple concussion to bleeding on or in the brain. While concussions usually heal within six months, although the symptoms can persist for more than a year, a more serious TBI can cause permanent damage and life-long disability.
  • Multiple fractures: Motorcycle riders are prone to bone fractures in a crash. The lower extremities are commonly involved, although the outstretched hands can lead to upper extremity fractures. Some fractures easily heal with casting, but more significant ones require surgery.
  • Spinal cord injuries: This injury can cause the rider to be permanently paralyzed, requiring long-term nursing care. This leads not only to permanent disability but to the loss of employment and dependency on others.

How a Motorcycle Injury Lawyer Can Help

Motorcyclists are dependent on motorists adhering to the rules of the road to prevent many accidents. Many motorists claim that they did not see the motorcyclist. However, this is no excuse, and they are guilty of negligence. An injury attorney is able to fight this conception by showing that the motorist did not take the normal precautions to ensure roadway safety. Since motorcycle injuries can be severe, leading to permanent disability, it is necessary that this attitude is disproven and that the at-fault party take responsibility for the injury.

How a Personal Injury Lawyer Investigates a Motorcyclist Injury

At our firm, we send our investigative team to the site of the accident to gather evidence against the at-fault party. We do this by interviewing witnesses who saw the accident happen and obtaining video footage of the crash from traffic and security cameras at local businesses. We also employ the techniques of accident reconstruction, which allows us to visualize the mechanics of the accident.
