Motorcyclist Dies in Wentworth Springs Crash

Authorities have reported that a motorcyclist tragically lost his life during a multiple-vehicle accident that took place in a rural location in Georgetown, a few miles to the north of Pollock Pines, on Sunday, September 1, 2019. According to authorities of California Highway Patrol (CHP), the accident involved both a motorcycle and an SUV and currently remains under investigation. The decedent was identified as Jacob Shuman, a 35-year-old man from Folsom and the owner of Jake’s Custom Cycles in Orangevale.

Crash Information

The crash took place at around 12:40 p.m. on Wentworth Springs Road in El Dorado County. Shuman had been driving his motorcycle in the area of Helix Flat Avenue and was heading east away from Ice House Road. His motorcycle reportedly drifted over the median for unknown reasons and entered westbound lanes before colliding head-on with a 2017 Toyota Rav 4. The driver of the Rav 4 was identified as a 37-year-old woman from Greenwood.

When CHP responders arrived, they found that Shuman had suffered critical injuries. Sadly, Shuman was officially declared deceased at the scene of the accident. Whether or not the driver of the Toyota suffered any trauma was not mentioned in reports. Additionally, officials noted that weather conditions had been sunny and clear at the time of the collision.

Motorcycle Accidents in El Dorado County

Many motorcyclists from the greater Sacramento area enjoy taking their bikes out to the nearby mountains to enjoy the beautiful scenery, especially during the summer months. However, mountain roads can be dangerous and numerous motorcycle accidents happen in the area every year.

According to statistics from collected police reports, there were 1,187 traumatic motorcycle accidents on El Dorado County roads between 2007 and 2019. These accidents caused a total of 1,304 injuries and cost another 56 people their lives. Just over one-third of these accidents happened on a state-operated highway while the others took place on county or municipal roads, meaning that smaller roadways saw a higher number of accidents.

Accident Types

Some types of accidents affect motorcyclists more often than others. In El Dorado, the most common type of accident involving motorcyclists were rollovers, which accounted for about 41 percent of the total 1,187 collisions. Following rollovers is hit-object accidents at exactly 23 percent, and broadside crashes at around ten percent. Less common types of motorcycle crashes included sideswipes, rear-end collisions and pedestrian-involved accidents.
