Fatality Reported in I-80 Motorcycle Rear-End Collision

A motorcycle rear-end collision near Davis occurred on October 20 after the rider crashed into the vehicle in front of it. The accident happened along westbound Interstate 80 near the off-ramp for Kidwell Road at about 3:25 p.m. The deceased rider was identified as a man from Elk Grove in his 60s, as reported by the California Highway Patrol (CHP)

Braking May Have Led to the Motorcycle Rear-End Collision

It was reported that authorities believe the rider didn’t brake quickly enough to avoid the crash. A traffic slowdown resulted from the collision that went as far as Dixon. CHP traffic accident detectives investigated the reason for the accident. The county coroner’s office will release the deceased rider’s name once the family receives notification.

Motorcycle Accidents Involving a Rear-End Collision

A rear-end crash is one of the most dangerous involving a motorcycle rider. This is because the rider is often thrown off their bike and suffers traumatic injuries as a result. In the majority of fatal motorcycle collisions involving other vehicles, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, they are struck in the front. Some of the reasons for a motorcycle rear-end collision include:

  • A sudden traffic stoppage may prevent the rider from stopping in time to avoid a collision with the vehicle up ahead.
  • The vehicle in front of the motorcyclist may have non-functioning brake lights.
  • The motorcycle may have defective brakes or tires, which causes the rider to crash into the vehicle in front. By retaining the motorcycle following an accident, it can be examined to determine if a defect caused the accident. If it did, a product liability claim may be filed to recover compensation.
  • A pothole or other roadway defect can cause a motorcycle to go off course and crash into another vehicle. If poor roadway maintenance leads to a motorcycle rear-end collision in this way, a claim might be filed against the municipality or other government entity. Since the time limit to file this type of claim is six months, getting help from an accident attorney may be helpful.
  • An aggressive driver can cause a motorcycle to crash into another vehicle by making threatening movements such as crowding or cutting in and out of traffic near the rider. In areas with traffic surveillance cameras, it may be determined that another motorist was involved and caused the accident.

Compensation Following a Wrongful Death Claim

The family of a deceased person may be able to recover damages for wrongful death resulting from a traffic accident caused by a negligent driver. While they will not feel any less grief, holding the negligent party responsible for the loss of their loved one may help avoid financial stress and help in bringing closure and justice. Depending on the case, compensation recovery for a wrongful death includes wages the deceased would have earned until retirement age, end-of-life expenses, loss of consortium for the surviving spouse and others.
