Motorcycle Accident on Interstate 5 in Lathrop

I’m Ed Smith, a Lathrop motorcycle accident attorney. An accident along Interstate 5 on June 1 caused an injury to a motorcyclist following a collision with a big rig. An investigation is ongoing to determine the accident cause and liability.

I want to extend my sympathy and prayers to the people injured in the crash that they will make a complete recovery.

Details of the Accident

The crash occurred along the freeway heading northbound that parallels Mosdale Road at around 9:00 in the morning. According to reports, the driver of the motorcycle suffered an injury to his head and it was bleeding. It is unknown if anyone else was injured. Paramedics were called to the site of the accident to aid possible victims.

Motorcycle Accidents

In 2015, the number of injuries from motorcycle accidents totaled 88,000 nationwide, according to the Insurance Information Institute. The number of fatalities among motorcycle riders that same year was 5,976. This represents an 8-percent increase in injuries over the previous year.

Reasons for Motorcycle Accidents

Riding while intoxicated contributed to 27 percent of motorcycle accident fatalities in 2015. Thirty-three percent of the riders were speeding, and another 27 percent lacked a license that was valid. The California Department of Motor Vehicles offers suggestions on precautions that motorcyclists can take to stay as safe as possible. This includes helmet use, protective clothing and other safety measures. For those who are fairly new to riding a motorcycle, the DMV offers suggestions on how to check a motorcycle to ensure it is in safe condition to ride. Passing when it is safe, remembering that other vehicles have blind spots, following traffic laws, not driving while drinking and exercising caution are ways bikers can enjoy their ride, and lower the risk of an accident.

Vulnerability on Motorcycles

Motorcyclists must share the road with other vehicles and are more vulnerable to injury and death due to lack of protection from other, heavier vehicles. Vehicles that do not obey traffic laws, such as making a left turn in front of a motorcyclist, speeding and driving too close to a motorcycle on the road can also cause injuries. Because lane splitting by motorcycles is legal in California, drivers have to be on the lookout for motorcyclists to avoid accidents.
