Modesto Man Injured in DUI Accident

A Modesto man was injured in a DUI accident during the early morning hours of March 31, 2019. The incident occurred shortly before 2:00 a.m. at the intersection of Orangeburg Avenue and Oakdale Road. A Newark man was driving a white 1995 Lexus west along Orangeburg Avenue, approaching the intersection. The Lexus driver reportedly ran a red light at the intersection and collided with a 2015 Infiniti QX60. The impact of the collision caused the Infiniti to overturn and pinned the driver inside. The Infiniti driver, identified as a 50-year-old Modesto man, was extricated by emergency personnel and transported to the hospital for treatment. An update regarding his condition has not yet been released by officials.

Accident Investigation

The Modesto Police Department said a witness informed authorities that the Lexus driver allegedly walked away from the scene following the collision. The motorist was found walking more than a half mile away from the crash near the 800 block of Oakdale Road. He was later arrested and booked on suspicion of driving under the influence, driving on a suspended license, resisting arrest, and hit and run.

Common Reasons for Hit and Run Accidents

Hit and run accidents often occur for a wide array of reasons. These include drivers who do not have auto insurance or who are driving on an expired or suspended driver license. Those who are driving while under the influence or operating an unregistered vehicle are also likely to flee the scene of an accident.

Recovering Damages in a Hit and Run Accident

Many assume that there may be no way to recover damages when a driver responsible for a crash leaves the scene. However, that is not always true in all cases. Those injured in an accident caused by a driver who has no insurance, insufficient coverage, or flees the scene may be able to collect compensation through their own car insurance. This is only possible if uninsured/underinsured motorist protection is available. This type of coverage helps pay for medical expenses, wage loss, and pain and suffering.
