Rollover Collision Involving Other Vehicles on Highway 50 Causes Fatality

A minor died in a Sacramento rollover collision on July 20 that involved three or more vehicles. The crash happened along westbound Highway 50 close to the on-ramp for 59th Street at about 6:35 p.m. The vehicle involved in the fatality passed over a barrier on the highway and ended up on its roof on the roadway’s side.

Minor Who Died in Rollover Collision Identified

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) said the minor was not using seat restraints at the time. He perished at the accident scene. The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office released the identity of the minor as an Elk Grove resident.

Multiple People Sent to Hospital Following Accident

Multiple injuries in the collision sent a number of people to a hospital. The on-ramp to the highway was shut down for some time as the scene was cleared, and an investigation was undertaken by the CHP traffic investigation unit. No information was released on whether alcohol or drugs factored into the crash.

Vehicle Rollover Collision Injuries

Due to the nature of rollover crashes, serious injuries and fatalities are likely. Without a seatbelt or other restraint, a person is more likely to be injured when their vehicle rolls over because they could be ejected. In a rollover collision, flying debris can also cause injuries. If occupants are not adequately protected, vehicle parts can crush them.

Rollover-Related Roof Collapse

Roof crush occurs when the vehicle isn’t up to standard requirements, and the top caves in during a rollover. There is commonly an increase in the number of deaths and trauma caused by roof crush, including broken bones, spinal cord and traumatic brain injuries, and fatalities. Even though they are required to do so in order to sell their vehicles, some automakers fail to build their vehicles with enough roof and side strength to prevent them from collapsing in a rollover. As a result of roof crush, there is also less space for survival, and it takes emergency responders longer to remove the injured from the vehicle.

A roof crush can be caused by a variety of factors, including:

  • Designing a roof that is weak or defective
  • Roofs that have been manufactured or installed improperly
  • Insufficient reinforcement of the roof structure
  • Putting the roof on the market without adequate testing

Rollover accidents can cause serious injuries and fatalities. You should retain your vehicle once you’ve been injured or lost a loved one, so it can be examined by experts to determine if roof crush occurred. You can also consult with an accident attorney who can investigate the cause of the accident and hold those responsible accountable by filing an auto product liability claim.
