Merced Girl Suffers Major Injuries in Hit-and-Run Accident

I’m Ed Smith, a car accident lawyer in Merced. A young girl was walking with her family near Merced on the afternoon of Monday, December 4, 2017. The casual stroll turned into a tragedy when an oncoming vehicle struck the young girl. It has been reported that the driver of the vehicle fled the scene upon impact. Sadly, the child had to be hospitalized for her injuries due to this senseless, heart-wrenching accident.

We send our hopes for a full and speedy recovery for this little girl who was injured in this accident.

What Happened?

A 3-year-old Merced girl was walking with her mother and siblings eastbound along 18th Street in the vicinity of R Street at approximately 3:40 pm. At the same time, a driver of a Honda Accord was traveling southbound along R Street. The family was attempting to cross R Street when one of their members, the 3-year-old girl, was struck by the Honda Accord. The Honda’s driver allegedly fled the scene following the collision and unfortunately, left the young child to suffer from her injuries without lending assistance or waiting for authorities to arrive.

Nature of Injuries

Medical personnel arrived in the area of the pedestrian accident. The young girl appeared to have suffered major injuries and was transported via air ambulance to the Valley Children’s Hospital in Madera for injury treatment.

What Caused the Accident?

Merced Police Department is handling the investigation. It typically takes about a week to 10 days to complete a Traffic Collision Report. However, officials indicated that the driver of the Honda Accord allegedly ran a red light leading up to the accident. Police are reviewing surveillance footage in the area to obtain additional information about the suspect vehicle.

Hit-and-Run Accident Statistics

It is undeniable that hit-and-run accidents are on the rise throughout the state of California. In fact, 2011 accident data, [the most recent year for data available], from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) revealed that 1,449 parties passed away in crashes involving hit-and-run drivers. Although drivers are aware of the consequences following a hit-and-run, these occurrences continue to persist due to the following:

If you or a loved one has suffered significant harm in an accident involving a hit-and-run driver, it is important to know that you do not have to battle this occurrence alone. You may need to utilize your uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage when involved in an accident with a hit-and-run driver. Contacting an experienced Merced car accident lawyer is critical in a hit-and-run accident.
