Merced County Bicycle Accident

I’m Ed Smith, a Merced bicycle accident lawyer. A bicyclist was riding in Merced County during the late morning hours of Tuesday, May 2, 2017. The cyclist was hit by an oncoming vehicle while riding along the right shoulder of the roadway.

What Happened?

A man in his early 20s was riding his bicycle eastbound along Sante Fe Drive in the vicinity of the former Castle Air Force Base in Atwater shortly before the noon hour. A 33-year-old woman was behind the wheel of her white Toyota Camry traveling eastbound along Santa Fe in the right lane. For unknown reasons, the woman strayed her car to the right, which struck the man riding his red and silver Mongoose mountain bicycle. The impact of the collision propelled the man off his bike and into the south shoulder of the roadway.

Was the Bicyclist Injured?

According to Officer Jeremy Carabajal from the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the man did not have any visible injuries after the bicycle accident. The officer reported that the man was alert and did not appear to have any signs of blood or any broken bones. However, the officer suspects that the man may have suffered some internal injuries. The man was taken to the Memorial Medical Center in Modesto for treatment. The status of his condition has not yet been released.

What Caused the Bicycle Accident?

The cause of the bicycle accident has not yet been released by authorities. Officers from the CHP do not suspect that drugs or alcohol contributed as factors to the collision. Witnesses did report that they observed the woman’s white Toyota Camry drift into the shoulder of the roadway moments before striking the cyclist.

Most Common Causes of Bicycle Accidents

Bicycle accidents are alarmingly common throughout the state of California. The reasons remain unknown as to why these accidents are increasing, however, distracted driving habits or reckless driving may be the contributing causes. Bicycle accidents tend to occur oftentimes due to a vehicle turning in front of a cyclist or even lane drifting. Sometimes, lane drifting may be caused by texting and driving or a different distraction in the vehicle. It is always best to refrain from distracted driving habits and pay close attention to objects or other vehicles along the roadway to ensure the safety of pedestrians, yourself and your loved ones.
