Another Arrest in the Elk Grove School System

Unfortunately, another arrest in the Elk Grove school system took place recently, with a crossing guard from a local school arrested by law enforcement officials.
A Crossing Guard at Marion Mix Elementary School
While there has been a significant amount of media attention given to sexual assault in schools, it appears as though this continues to be a significant issue facing the public today. A local crossing guard from Marion Mix Elementary School was arrested while on the job by the Sexual Assault Bureau of the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department. The 34-year old man from Sacramento was taken into custody after being accused of sexually assaulting a child 14-years old. According to a spokesman from the local Sheriff’s Department, the child was not a student at the school. While sexual assault at elementary schools is already shocking, the problem could extend to sexual assault in preschools as well.
A Variety of Charges
The man arrested faces a variety of charges include possession of obscene materials depicting a minor (under the age of 18 years old), sexual battery, and engaging in lewd acts with a minor. It is important for people to understand that sexual assault does not have to cause physically traumatic injuries to be considered a sexual assault and can lead to unseen injuries, such as PTSD. The accused faces three counts of lewd acts with a child and has been ruled ineligible for bail. He remains in custody of local law enforcement officials.
Multiple Arrests in Recent Months
Particularly disheartening for everyone involved, this is the fifth time that an employee of volunteer of the Elk Grove Unified school system has been investigated for some sort of inappropriate or criminal investigation related to kids in the past 13 months. Elk Grove Unified is the largest school district in the region at well over 60,000 students. Because these arrests continue to happen in the school district, it has become particularly concerning to the community.
Sexual Assault Involving Children Can Take Place in a Variety of Settings
While sexual assault in schools has received a significant amount of media attention recently, it is important for parents, family members, and friends to remain vigilant of sexual assault involving children in all settings. People should keep in mind that children have been the target of sexual abuse in foster care, clergy sexual assault, and even assault in youth sports leagues. For this reason, people should understand some of the signs of sexual assault including sudden refusal to attend a previously enjoyable activity, increased irritability from normal, and sexual knowledge that is inappropriate for the child’s age. If any of these signs are present, it is important to simply ask the child if something is wrong. Knowledge is the first step to stopping such heinous acts.
