Man Identified After Fatal I-5 Crash

On Tuesday, November 12, 2019, officials of the Shasta County Sheriff’s Department released the identity of a man who tragically lost his life in a recent Redding car accident. The man was identified as 78-year-old Redding resident Douglas Nelson Denton. The Redding Police Department (RPD) reported that the crash happened around a week earlier on Tuesday, November 6, 2019. RPD indicated that the accident involved multiple vehicles and that the decedent had been driving on a municipal road just prior to the collision. The fatal I-5 crash remains under investigation.

Crash Information

According to police reports, the crash happened at around 9:45 a.m. Denton had been driving on Hilltop Drive and was just entering the highway on-ramp to Interstate 5 when he apparently lost control of his SUV. The vehicle drove off the on-ramp and down an embankment leading to southbound lanes of the freeway. As Denton’s vehicle entered traffic, it collided with a silver pickup truck. According to reports, both vehicles sustained major damages during the impact.

CHP was notified about the incident by a witness and immediately dispatched emergency responders to the accident site. When they reached the collision scene, medical personnel determined that Denton had suffered severe trauma. Sadly, he lost his life on-site. Responders reportedly found two occupants in the pickup truck, neither of which suffered injuries during the collision.

Investigation

While RPD investigators are looking into what caused this accident, no suspected factors have been reported. However, police did state that they do not believe intoxication played a role in the crash. In many cases like this one, the accident is caused by factors that drivers don’t have any control over. For instance, a defective steering system or large pothole in the road can force a driver into a crash. However, it can sometimes be difficult for investigators to notice these factors when the driver is unable to report what happened.

Sadly, official accident investigations often don’t go far enough. For this reason, it’s crucial to speak to a wrongful death lawyer who can launch a private investigation into possible causal factors of the crash. A lawyer with experience handling auto accidents will know how to find out if any negligence was involved and defend your family’s right to hold at-fault parties responsible for damages.

Finding a Trustworthy Lawyer

The period of time after a fatal accident is often very difficult for families. It’s common for people who lost a loved one to feel overwhelmed by their emotions, and many have a hard time keeping track of their schedules or working up the energy to do their daily tasks. Trying to find a lawyer that you know will handle your case with compassion and skill can seem like another stressful thing to worry about when what you need to focus on is your personal well-being. However, having a lawyer early on can be crucial to your case, and finding someone you can trust is easy if you know what to look for.
