State Route 99 Major Injury Motorcycle Crash With Vehicle

A major injury motorcycle crash occurred in Acampo north of Stockton on June 19 in a crash involving a motor vehicle. The accident happened along southbound State Route 99 just south of the Collier Road off-ramp around 4:06 p.m. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) said the rider was struck by a Honda sedan and landed on the frontage road.

Rider Hospitalized in Major Injury Motorcycle Crash

The motorcyclist was found lying on the ground. Medics with the fire department transported the rider to a hospital with major injuries. The Harley-Davidson the rider was using was towed from the scene. Information was not provided about the accident except that the vehicle driver had remained at the scene to wait for officers. An investigation conducted by the CHP traffic collision detectives is determining fault and how the crash happened.

How Negligent Drivers Cause Accidents Involving Motorcycles

Negligent drivers can significantly increase the risk of a major injury in a motorcycle crash. Key factors contributing to these incidents include:

  • Failure to check blind spots: Motorcycles are smaller and can easily be hidden in a car’s blind spots, leading to collisions during lane changes or turns.
  • Distracted driving: Activities like texting, eating, or adjusting the radio take attention away from the road, making it difficult to notice motorcyclists.
  • Speeding: Excessive speeds reduce a driver’s ability to react quickly to avoid a motorcycle, especially in sudden traffic changes.
  • Following too closely: Tailgating does not allow sufficient stopping distance, increasing the likelihood of rear-end collisions with motorcycles.
  • Driving under the influence: Alcohol or drugs impair judgment, reaction times, and coordination, which are critical for safely sharing the road with motorcycles.
  • Ignoring traffic signals: Running red lights or failing to yield the right of way can result in high-impact crashes involving motorcycles.
