Major Injury Accident at Florin Intersection

Collision With UPS Truck Occurs on Florin Perkins Road

A major injury accident occurred in Florin on April 10 at the intersection of southbound Florin Perkins Road and Weyland Avenue. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the accident occurred at about 10:00 a.m. and involved two vehicles described as a Chevrolet Suburban and a UPS truck. First responders were summoned to evaluate the injured party, and a tow truck was needed to haul the Suburban that sustained heavy front end and left-sided damage. The accident caused traffic difficulties as lanes were blocked while the investigation was underway, and the major injury crash was cleared. Authorities have not said why the crash happened as of the time of this report and have not updated information about the condition of the injured as of yet.

UPS Trucks

UPS is one of the largest freight delivery services in the country. Nationally, UPS has upwards of 120,000 package trucks (brown delivery trucks), vans, tractor-trailers, and other vehicles in its fleet. According to federal tracking agencies, the company received approximately 5,000 safety violations over the period 2016 to 2018. During this time, there were more than 2,116 accidents injuring 1,047 people and killing 66 others. Our law firm believes that UPS should be held accountable for their poor safety record and the injuries they caused. Injured individuals should not be financially strapped due to the negligence of another person or company. Rather, they should be able to recover damages such as medical costs, lost wages, and pain and suffering.

Why Are UPS Trucks Dangerous?

The roads are less safe due to the practices of delivery companies that push their drivers to make deliveries quickly. In order to meet this expectation, drivers often perform their duties while fatigued. Truck driver fatigue is a major reason for UPS truck accidents, along with their need to hurry from one stop to another. Twenty-five percent of all such accidents happen among those drivers who have worked for 12-17 hours at a stretch. The reason drivers work such long hours is that their jobs hang in the balance. If they do not deliver their packages on time, the drivers risk losing their jobs.

Intersection Accidents

Out of the many areas where accidents happen, intersections are among the worse. This is due to the complexity of an intersection where pedestrians, bicyclists, and motor vehicles are brought together. Statistically, there are about 2.5 million accidents in intersections annually. Of all major injury accidents, 50 percent happen in an intersection. Moreover, 20 percent of all fatal crashes occur in intersections. Drivers who ignore a red light are the cause of a significant number of intersection accidents.

Other causes of intersection accidents are:

  • Speeding is a prominent cause of intersection accidents.
  • Due to their slower reaction time, fatigued drivers often cause intersection accidents.
  • Intersection crashes are often caused by motorists who focus on things other than driving. They may not see that a traffic light has changed or another driver has slowed down or stopped ahead of them.
  • Drunk drivers are known to have reduced reaction time and impaired cognition. Both are responsible for intersection accidents.
  • If an intersection’s design is such that visibility is hampered or the lanes are not clearly marked, more accidents are likely.
  • Vehicle defects such as failed brakes and faulty tires can be responsible for an intersection crash.

Investigating a Major Injury Accident

At our firm, we send our investigators to the scene of the accident to gather evidence against the at-fault driver. This is important since, without proof of liability, the case is not viable. To do this, our investigators interview witnesses and review police reports for mistakes. We also obtain video footage from traffic and business surveillance cameras that show the accident as it happened. Our investigative team uses accident reconstruction to show the placement of the vehicles before, during and after the crash. Once all evidence has been compiled, our investigators release it to our legal team as they build a strong case for our client.
