Major Injuries Sustained During Accident Near Rio Dell

On Friday, August 28, 2020, at least one person was left with injuries as the result of a collision near Rio Dell. According to information from California Highway Patrol (CHP), the crash happened in the early evening and involved two passenger vehicles. While the number of individuals hurt during the incident has not been reported, CHP did indicate that severe trauma was involved. The cause of this crash remains under investigation.

Collision Details

The collision reportedly took place at about 5:48 p.m. on Highway 36 in the small town of Hydesville, around one mile north of Rio Dell. According to police, a Subaru Forester and Dodge pickup truck collided head-on near the intersection of A Street on the southern edge of the town. Responders indicated that the crash caused major damage to both of the involved vehicles.

After the accident was reported to CHP, dispatchers sent out a response team to the site. When officials arrived, they found that at least one of the involved individuals was severely injured and called for an ambulance to transport injured parties to a nearby hospital.

Investigation

While police are actively attempting to determine what caused this crash, investigators haven’t stated what factors they suspect could have been involved. Often, crashes that involve multiple vehicles also involve more than one causal factor. Furthermore, many common accident factors are not controlled by the involved drivers. These can include things like malfunctioning vehicle parts and dangerous roads.

Head-On Collisions

In a head-crash, both vehicles transfer their full momentum into each other. For this reason, head-on crashes are some of the most dangerous car accidents that can happen. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that head-on accidents that take place over the speed of 50 miles per hour almost always cause severe or fatal trauma.

According to data from local traffic agencies, around 5.6 percent of traumatic car accidents in Humboldt County are head-on collisions. Furthermore, head-on accidents in Humboldt had a fatality rate of 8.3 percent while the rate for accidents, in general, was only around 3.4 percent. Likewise, head-on accidents had a severe injury rate of 17.03 percent, while the rate for collisions overall was around 12 percent.
