Lakehead Trucking Crash Results in Major Injuries and Fatally Injures Dog

According to Shasta California Highway Patrol (CHP), an accident near the small community of Lakehead left one person with major injuries on Monday, December 16, 2019. In addition to the severely injured man, a dog inside one of the vehicles at the time of the crash was fatally injured during the incident. Reports indicated that the accident happened in the morning on an area highway during sunny weather conditions and involved two vehicles, including a van and a large commercial truck. CHP says that this Lakehead trucking crash is currently being investigated.

Crash Information

The accident was reported just after 8:00 a.m. on the southbound side of Highway Interstate 5 near the junction located at Lakeshore Drive. A white work van was traveling at around 20 miles per hour using the far right-hand lane of the highway when it collided head-on with the rear end of a big rig, severely damaging the front of the vehicle. Pictures taken at the accident scene show the front of the van partially wedged under the big rig, and a piece of the van’s hood smashed through the front window.

Emergency responders arrived at the accident scene shortly after the collision occurred. Responders reported that they found the van driver trapped inside his wrecked vehicle and had to use heavy machinery to extricate him. Medics found that the van driver had suffered two broken legs and had him hospitalized. According to hospital staff, he is expected to survive his injuries. Sadly, his dog was fatally injured and lost its life on-scene.

Investigation

The highway was partially closed off while accident response was underway and remained shut down while CHP conducted a preliminary investigation of the scene. According to traffic reports, the roadway was fully reopened by 11:15 a.m., over three hours after the accident took place. So far, a full report on suspected collision factors has not been released.

Trucking Accidents and Quick Action

Big rigs are normally owned by a large company that operates an entire fleet of vehicles. Because these companies constantly have vehicles on the road, they tend to see accidents as a simple liability of operating their business and are ready to take action as soon as a crash occurs. In most cases, the trucking company will have a legal team at-the-ready to travel to the crash scene itself and collect their own evidence and witness statements.

Because trucking companies are so well prepared to defend themselves from liability, it’s critical for injured parties to contact a Redding truck accident lawyer at the earliest opportunity. If your lawyer can get to work on your case right away, they will be able to better defend your right to claim compensation from negligent parties.
