Pedestrian Killed on Highway 99 near Chico

I’m Ed Smith, a Chico Wrongful Death Lawyer. Tragically, a man was killed by a vehicle while standing on the side of the road on Sunday, September 10.

What Happened?

Early Sunday morning, at about 4:20 a.m. Jeffery Pyburn was driving a GMC Yukon north on Highway 99, also known as the Golden State Highway, near Gaia Way. While driving, 57-year-old Jeffery Pyburn allegedly started to drift to the right and began to leave the roadway.

A man was standing alongside the road, next to two parked cars at the time Pyburn approached. The large sports utility vehicle continued to leave the road and ran into the pedestrian and one of the parked cars. The man on the side of the road died as a result of the impact but the driver, Pyburn, was uninjured.

The body of the pedestrian was taken by officials to the Butte County Coroner’s office. On Monday they identified the man as 51-year-old Jeffrey Cahn from Paradise, California. The crash was investigated by California Highway Patrol officers deemed that neither alcohol nor drugs were factors in the tragic accident.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the friends and family of Mr. Cahn during this difficult time.

Pedestrian Accidents

Accidents involving pedestrians are extremely dangerous and often fatal. The U.S. Center for Disease Control estimates that 70,000 pedestrians are injured yearly and found that the number of pedestrian fatalities has risen by 12 percent from 2006 to 2015. Here are some other recent incidents in Northern California involving pedestrians:

Fatal Vallejo Pedestrian Collision

A man was struck by a GMC Sierra pickup truck while he was trying to cross the eastbound lanes of I-80 at around 4:00 in the morning. The driver of the truck stopped and called emergency services. The pedestrian was declared dead at the scene by attending paramedics who found him on the shoulder, next to the center divider.

Bicycle Accident Injures 2 Pedestrians in South Lake Tahoe

Two pedestrians were waiting at a busy intersection in South Lake Tahoe to cross the road. When the signal illuminated and it was safe to walk, the two pedestrians stepped into the crosswalk and started across the street. After only a few steps they were both knocked over by a man riding a motorized bicycle. The cyclist attempted to leave before the authorities arrived but was caught and arrested for Hit and Run and Driving Under the Influence. Both of the pedestrians were sent to a hospital where doctors could treat their injuries.

Berkeley Hit and Run Pedestrian Accident

A motorcyclist hit a jogger along Wildcat Canyon Road. The rider was illegally passing another car and struck a man jogging on the other side of the road. The motorcyclist did not stop and give aid but instead continued on. The victim was taken to the John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek for his injuries.
