Jaywalkers Beware

I’m Ed Smith, a Sacramento Personal Injury Lawyer. It seems like everywhere you go, you hear about locals saying that their area is known for its poor drivers. Recently, a report came out that contained objective data highlighting some of the poor driving in the local region. This information should be of interest to everyone in the Sacramento area.

Data from Insurance Companies

Most people understand that their insurance rates are impacted by their rates of auto accidents, speeding tickets, any DUI convictions, and numerous other driving-related citations. QuoteWizard is a network of insurance agents with this data, nationwide. The data from this network calculated the rankings of various cities across the country in the categories above. Rankings for various cities in California include:

  • Sacramento: First
  • Richmond: Fourth
  • San Diego: Fifth
  • Los Angeles: Sixth
  • Bakersfield: Tenth

This ranking indicates that Sacramento had the highest rate of traffic incidences highlighted above. A report from Allstate highlighted that the typical driver in Sacramento has one collision in about every eight years. More accidents also lead to more hit and runs, making it harder to find the person responsible.

Problems for Pedestrians

While the report highlights traffic violations, Sacramento is a city known for its beautiful weather. This means that more people are outside running, riding their bikes, or perhaps just walking around town. The rate of accidents, tickets, and DUIs should be concerning to pedestrians and cyclists everywhere. Locals everywhere should take extra caution when crossing the street to avoid a pedestrian accident that could result in a wrongful death. Cyclists should make sure that they are staying in bike lanes, when available, to avoid a disastrous bicycle accident. Both of these groups of people have small silhouettes on the road that make it hard for drivers to notice them. Using extra caution can help to avoid major injuries.

All Motor Vehicles Included

Importantly, the information doesn’t just include people driving four-door sedans. Those who operate motorcycles and large commercial vehicles, such as trucks, should take notice as well. Those who get into a motorcycle accident have a higher chance of getting injured. Because of the lack of metal frame between the rider, other cars, and the pavement, riders should always make sure that they wear a helmet. When people speed, they collide with other vehicles with greater force, leading to more serious injuries. Commercial truck drivers should also exercise extreme caution. In addition to increasing the chance of a truck accident, driving under the influence while operating a commercial vehicle could lead to job loss, permanent revocation of a driver’s license, or even jail time.
