I’m Ed Smith, a Sacramento auto accident attorney. New figures are showing just how many motorists have crashed along a major construction zone of Interstate 80.
Nearly 20 Crashes Per Month
Since the beginning of 2016, there have been nearly 100 crashes along the westbound highway, at a rate of close to 20 crashes a month.
The construction work taking place along Interstate 80 in Sacramento might be moving forward, but it seems, motorists aren’t moving at all. Crashes have spiked along the 10-mile stretch known as the Across The Top project.
Widening Interstate 80
The Across The Top project is a huge undertaking that involves crews widening and rebuilding the freeway. Construction stretches from the Sacramento-Yolo County line all the way to Watt Avenue.
CHP Responding to More Crashes
During the first month of construction on the westbound lanes, the California Highway Patrol reported 41 crashes, as opposed to only 18 during that same time frame a year earlier (prior to construction).
Crashes in the first quarter of the year have doubled year after year. Since then it’s gotten worse not better, with 35 additional collisions in about two two months.
Monitoring the Roadway for Potential Hazards
The CHP indicated officers are constantly monitoring and reviewing the Across The Top stretch of highway in order to identify potential hazards or situations that may make the road unsafe.
Slow Down This Memorial Day Weekend
Memorial Day weekend is one of the busiest travel holidays. The CHP has a strong warning for out-of-town motorists. Even though the speed limit is 55 miles per hour in the area, the safe speed in some locations may actually be less.
A common occurrence of crashes involves distracted drivers exceeding the speed limit through the construction zone.
