Collision on U.S. 50 Causes One Vehicle to Go Off the Road

An injury accident happened on March 31 in Sacramento when one driver lost control of their vehicle. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that the accident happened between a semi and a box truck around 3:22 p.m. It happened along westbound U.S. 50 just west of the Howe Avenue off-ramp.

Box Truck Goes Out of Control and Exits Freeway

According to the incident report, the box truck swerved across all the lanes of traffic and went down an embankment on the right-hand side. It was not visible from the freeway, having gone down the embankment between 50 and 70 feet and damaged about 100 feet of guardrail.

Collision Being Investigated to Determine the Cause

Sacramento Fire Department first responders arrived to assess those in the accident and determined that one person had suffered injuries. The accident is under investigation by the CHP to discover what happened to cause the injury accident.

Why a Driver Loses Control of Their Vehicle

There are a number of reasons that a driver loses control of their vehicle. Many have to do with negligence of some type, whether on the part of the motorist or from an outside influence. Some of the reasons these accidents happen include:

  • Brake, steering. or steering failure: A blowout or mechanical failure of the brakes or steering can cause the driver to lose the ability to control their vehicle. When defects are the cause, a claim can be filed for damages against the manufacturers through a product liability lawsuit. In these cases, negligence does not have to be shown, only that the product was unaltered and used as intended.
  • Speeding and other types of reckless driving: A driver who is speeding can lose control of their vehicle or find themselves unable to stop if a sudden slowdown occurs up ahead. Other forms of reckless driving include tailgating, cutting in and out of traffic, racing and others. In injury accidents caused by a reckless driver, the injured party may place a claim for compensation to pay their medical costs, for their pain and suffering, and for lost wages.
  • Drunk driving: A driver who is intoxicated, either through the use of alcohol or drugs, is a danger on the road because they cannot control their vehicle and have reduced reflexes and poor judgment. This negligence means the injured party may place a claim for compensation to pay their expenses associated with the accident.
  • Distracted driving: A major cause of an injury accident, distracted drivers may be texting, talking on their cell phone, or changing a radio station. These activities take the driver’s mind away from what they are doing.

Investigating an Injury Accident

For an injured party to obtain compensation for their injuries, it is necessary to prove that someone or something was negligent. This ranges from a speeding driver to someone driving drunk to poor roadway maintenance. We send our investigative team to the site where the injury accident occurred to gather evidence. They speak to witnesses, perform accident reconstruction, obtain videos of the crash and review police reports for mistakes. Once all data is accumulated, it is released to our injury lawyers, who use it to build a robust case for our clients.
