Rumsey Rollover Accident Reported on Southbound State Route 16

A Rumsey rollover accident happened on May 25 in front of the Yolo Upper Park Campground northwest of Woodland. The accident happened shortly after 5:00 p.m. along southbound State Route 16 at Rumsey Canyon Road. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported a Toyota Tacoma pickup overturned on its roof.

Rumsey Rollover Accident Cause Being Determined

The driver was ejected from the vehicle and allegedly suffered a head injury and leg lacerations. Fire department first responders transported the injured driver to UC Davis hospital for treatment. Detectives with the CHP traffic unit are investigating to find out why the accident occurred.

Injuries Caused by Rollovers

A Rumsey rollover accident can have a significant risk of severe injuries. If individuals are not using seat belts or other restraints during a rollover, the likelihood of sustaining these injuries increases. Additionally, during a rollover, debris inside the vehicle can become airborne, causing injuries to the occupants. Occupants may suffer head injuries or be crushed by parts of the vehicle if they are not protected by airbags and seat belts.

Roof Collapse in Rollovers

Traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, broken bones, lacerations, and even fatalities can result from roof collapses in a single-vehicle Rumsey rollover accident. Even though auto manufacturers are mandated to design their vehicles to prevent roof and side collapses during rollovers, not all vehicles comply. Roof collapse further diminishes the survivability space for the occupants. Fires, fuel spills, and other hazardous conditions caused by rollovers can also lead to additional injuries or fatalities. When a roof crush occurs, it is essential to preserve the vehicle for engineers to examine it. If a manufacturer’s design flaw contributes to or causes injuries, they may be held liable through an auto product liability claim.

Government Negligence in Roadway Maintenance

Negligence in roadway maintenance can also cause or contribute to rollover accidents. Such negligence includes potholes, malfunctioning traffic lights, inadequate overhead lighting, and overgrown foliage obstructing a driver’s view. An injury lawyer’s investigators may determine if government negligence played a role in causing a single-vehicle rollover by examining the accident location.

Filing a Claim Against a Government Entity

Entities responsible for the design and maintenance of roadways can be sued for negligence. Unlike other personal injury claims, claims against government entities have a much shorter statute of limitations of six months. Therefore, hiring an accident attorney may be beneficial. An attorney can ensure all necessary paperwork is completed and filed on time, ensuring the case is heard in court.
