Charter Bus Involved in Big Rig Crash on Interstate 5
A collision involving a big rig hauling bananas and a charter bus near Willows caused injuries to eight people. The accident occurred along Interstate 5 close to County Road 39 around 11:30 p.m. The driver of the charter bus, age 40, proceeded north along I-5, followed by a Kenworth driven by a man, age 60.
Big Rig Crash Causes Bus to Overturn
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that the big rig hit the bus in the left rear, then went into the median and hit a row of shrubs. The big rig ended up facing northwest. After it was struck, the bus veered northeast and entered an area off the road where it hit a fence and overturned onto its side. The bus ended up facing east.
Eight People Transported to Hospitals Following Big Rig Crash
The CHP reported that the bus was carrying 19 passengers, with eight taken to hospitals with injuries. The charter bus was apparently registered in Mexico, equipped with bunk beds and transporting mariachis to an unknown destination. The semi was carrying 20,000 tons of bananas. One of the highway lanes was shut down as the accident site was cleared.
Determination Being Made on Cause of Big Rig Crash With Bus
Neither alcohol nor drugs are believed to have been involved as a factor in the crash. The CHP traffic accident investigators are determining why the collision occurred and which driver was at fault.
