Holiday Package Theft Prevention Tips

I’m Ed Smith, a Roseville personal injury attorney. Online shopping may be a breeze for consumers looking for a quick alternative to visiting the mall this time of year. A recent study indicated more people are shopping online than ever before. However, the packages that are delivered to the buyers doorstep may be subject to theft. Package thievery, especially after the recent Cyber Monday sale, is expected to increase the number of packages delivered during this holiday season to an all-time record. You may be asking yourself how to protect your packages in light of this situation. That is exactly what this post is about. Below you will find helpful hints to keep your packages safe this holiday season.

Cyber Monday Shoppers

The Cyber Monday online shopping event has set a record for 2016. The record hit almost $3.5 billion dollars in sales. This means that there will be a lot of merchandise arriving in packages on the front porches in neighborhoods just in time for Christmas. This is great news for thieves. Let’s do everything we can to ensure that our packages get to their rightful destination – under the tree for our loved ones!

Package Theft Prevention Tips

Local police departments have reported a package theft increase as great as 50 percent year-to-year. Authorities are also searching for solutions for these types of crimes. Officers are using GPS trackers and bait packages to attempt to deter and track down thieves. We appreciate their help in keeping our deliveries safe and sound. But what can we do on our own? Review the following tips on how to avoid falling victim to package theft this Christmas season:

  • Schedule your package delivery around a time frame for when you will be at home.
  • If you can’t be at home for the time of delivery, have the package delivered to your workplace or to a neighbor that will be at home and expecting it.
  • If neither of these tips are options, you may include delivery instructions while you’re placing the order to tell the driver to deliver the packages out of plain view.
  • Place surveillance cameras in your home to deter thieves.
  • If your surveillance cameras capture clear footage of thieves stealing packages from your home, file a police report including the evidence. You may use social media to upload the video and track down the identity of the thief.

One Las Vegas man is dealing with package thievery in the most unique yet vengeful way. Eric Snow, a 38-year Army veteran, is fighting back against thieves that have been recently taking packages from his home. Snow has created a “bait package” where he has filled the package with excrement from Heidi, his 95-pound German Shepherd. As you can see in the following video, surveillance footage from cameras installed in Snow’s home show two thieves taking the “bait package” from Snow’s home and driving away in a green early 1990’s Honda Accord sedan.
