A driver was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence (DUI) after a hit and run accident on Redwood Avenue in the Atwater area on the night of Monday, August 2, 2021. Details on the Hit and Run Crash on Redwood Avenue in Atwater

Officials reported that a 25-year-old Merced man was behind the wheel of a white Buick Regal traveling eastbound on Redwood Avenue. The Buick driver reportedly ran a posted stop sign and crashed into the passenger side of a Chevrolet Silverado heading north on Third Street. The impact of the collision allegedly propelled the Chevrolet through the intersection, causing it to strike the front end of a Honda Civic. The Chevrolet driver and a passenger in the Buick suffered injuries described as minor, and neither was hospitalized, Atwater PD reported.

The Buick driver reportedly fled the scene and was later stopped by officials at Parade Street and Bellevue Road. Atwater PD said during the traffic stop, it was determined that the Buick driver had a suspended license and was showing signs of intoxication. He was arrested on suspicion of misdemeanor driving with a suspended license for driving under the influence, DUI drugs or alcohol causing bodily injury, DUI with a 0.08 BAC causing bodily injury, and felony hit and run resulting in injury or death. He has been booked into Merced County Jail.

What You Should Know About Hit and Run Accidents

Every time you get behind the wheel of your car, you may run the risk of getting injured in an accident. Unfortunately, that is the cost of traveling on the road. If you are involved in a traffic collision with a driver who does not have liability coverage or one that has fled the scene, you may be unsure of how to proceed in your situation to cover property damage and resulting injuries. Fortunately, you may be able to seek recourse through your insurer if you carry uninsured motorist (UM) coverage. This protects the insured and occupants in their vehicle from injury suffered in an accident caused by a driver who does not carry liability coverage or one that has committed a hit and run.

Keep in mind that various filing criteria and deadlines must be met when bringing first-party insurance claims. The insurer must be contacted and informed of the details surrounding the incident, including property damage and bodily injury. The insurance carrier will explain what the policy may cover and how it may apply to the collision. However, not all insurance companies are fair when it comes to offering compensation under UM coverage. They may use defense tactics that may downplay the value of the claim for damages or outright deny it. Retaining legal counsel may make the difference in such situations.
